Description of Work The Nurse Supervisor II is responsible for 24-hour supervision of nursing services for all of the residents in the C/W area of JIRDC. This position is a Nurse Supervisor with the purpose of ensuring provision of competent nursing care to all residents living in the area homes. This person supervises RNs and LPNs assigned to the area. This person is responsible for scheduling nursing coverage on 1st and 2nd shift and may occasionally provide coverage on 3rd shift. This person will take call-ins for 1st and 2nd shift and arrange coverage as needed. The health status of all residents is monitored by this person and the meeting of all health care needs is the responsibility of this supervisor. This person is responsible for identifying nursing needs and problems, for developing approaches to solve problems and meet needs, and for continuously monitoring the care on 1st shift & 3rd shift. This person communicates closely with the 2nd shift Campus Nurse Supervisor II, 1st shift Nurse Supervisor IIs and QIDPs in each home and with health care supervisors as the need arises. This person is involved with families in difficult situations and communicates with other hospitals and health care providers as necessary in meeting resident needs. This person works closely with the Nurse Director to develop policy and procedure and to coordinate services. This person is part of the nursing management team, area management team and may serve on task forces and committees as requested. This person will serve as the nurse supervisor on-call every 4th week and at other times as needed.

Management Preferences:

Experience in nursing supervision.
Experience in supervision of RNs and/or LPNs.
Thorough knowledge of professional nursing theory, techniques, practices, and the organization and operation of the nursing program in the area of assignment.
Considerable knowledge of management and supervisory methods, practices, and procedures.
Considerable knowledge of the trends and methods of nursing education.

Ability to:

Mentor new supervisors.
Independently implement the nursing process to meet resident needs.
Direct and carry out prescribed medical treatments and therapeutic programs.
Plan, organize, and supervise the work of nursing staff.
Anticipate, recognize and respond appropriately to potential problematic situations.
Advise and provide input to management regarding strategic plan, development of policies and procedures, and global organizational issues.
Effectively disseminate information on changes in policies, procedures, protocols, etc. via various channels such as meetings, bulletin boards, memos, email, etc.
Coach and counsel employees.
Prepare and maintain reports of activities and resident progress.
Identify and address quality monitoring and performance improvement issues for nursing services.
Evaluate the quality of nursing services delivered and institute methods of improving or maintaining established standards of nursing care.

Physical Requirements:

Must be able to successfully perform all functions applicable to nursing on the ADA checklist for all nursing positions at JIRDC. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements Some state job postings say you can qualify by an “equivalent combination of education and experience.” If that language appears below, then you may qualify through EITHER years of education OR years of directly related experience, OR a combination of both. Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of North Carolina and three years of nursing experience, including one year of experience in a Nurse Supervisor capacity. Degrees must be from appropriately accredited colleges or universities.
