Working with the department manager, the RNCharge Nurse provides leadership and clinical expertise on theirrespective shift and department. They coordinate unit resources toensure appropriate staffing levels based on the unique needs ofpatients on the unit, both clinically and financially. Theyfunction as clinical support for staff and are a role model ofcompetency and professionalism. The Emergency Department is a33-bed unit with 3 Trauma Bays. We are a Level 2 Trauma Center,Accredited Chest Pain and Stroke Center. Our typical nurse topatient ratio is 4:1. We are a busy Emergency Department thattreats high acuity patients positioned between two Level 1 TraumaCenters (located in Utah and Denver). Our Emergency Departmentprides itself on having that family atmosphere. Previous charge nurse experience within an emergency departmentpreferred. Essential Functions Performs appropriate assessment of physical, social, andpsychological status (including cognitive, communicative anddevelopmental skills as appropriate). Seeks and evaluates information acquired from other members ofinterdisciplinary team: patient, family, physician, non-nursingdisciplines, support staff, others. Uses assessment information and critical thinking skills tocollaboratively develop individualized plan of care. Actively seekspatient, family, team, and physician involvement to develop plan ofcare including needed education. Collaboratively plans and prepares patients for further supportneeds once the current episode of care outcomes are met (i.e.,teaching, referrals, and follow-up). Directs the interdisciplinary care team via delegation,coordination, and collaboration. Provides or delegates careconsistent with plan of care, guidelines of care, and professionallicensure provisions. Demonstrates the ability to set priorities and to coordinateand organize patient care delivery through managing time, supplies,and resources. Evaluates patient response to interventions through review ofachievement of goals, clinical outcomes, and patient and familysatisfaction. Revises plan of care as indicated and reassesseschanges as appropriate. Demonstrates professional behavior. Ensures staffaccountability to the same standards. Encourages nursingprofessionalism by coaching and developing others. Integrates legal and ethical standards into practice, complieswith regulatory standards, practices within scope of licensure,provides accurate & timely documentation, and understands legalimplications of care delivery. Estimates current and next shift staffing needs to deliveroptimal patient care. Matches nurse skill levels with patientrequirements. Manages premium pay and overtime efficiently forcost-effectiveness and allocates resources appropriately. Accountable for operational and clinical leadership of the unitor department including setting clear expectations and holdingstaff accountable for outcomes and behaviors. Mediates conflicts between staff, families, physicians, andother departments. Acts as a resource for setting clear expectations related tohourly rounds, communication boards, and joint bedside report. Guides others and initiates conversations using appropriatetools to resolve problems and to encourage accountability andprofessional growth. Supports and enforces Intermountain and unit policies andprocedures to ensure safety, quality, compliance, and patientcare. Activates chain of command, rapid response, or code alerts whenappropriate to facilitate patient and staff safety. Actively participates in and facilitates continuous qualityimprovement in areas of clinical care, service experience, andoperational effectiveness. Required to complete Charge Nurse training.

  • Skills Assessment Planning Implementation Evaluation Collaboration Leadership Communication Minimum Qualifications Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in state ofpractice.

Valid compact licenses must be transferred to the stateof practice within 60 days of the start of employment. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for HealthcareProviders. Unit Specific Certification as required (i.e., ACLS, PALS,etc.). Experience in assigned clinical area. Mentoring experience. Bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN) from an accreditedinstitution (degree will be verified). Registered Nurses (RNs)hired or promoted into this role must obtain their Bachelor ofScience in Nursing (BSN) within four years of their hire orpromotion date. If there is an existing education agreement, thatagreement will take precedence. Preferred Qualifications One year of clinical nursing experience.

Physical Requirements:

Physical Requirements Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels,assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment andsupplies. Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients,and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as wellas hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, andissues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergencysituations. Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex anddelicate equipment with precision and accuracy. This includesfrequent computer use and typing for documenting patient care,accessing needed information, medication preparation, etc. Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transferpatients. Will also bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies andequipment. Typically includes items of varying weights, up to andincluding heavy items.
