Job Description Reporting to a Nursing Director- or other senior clinical leader,the Assistant Nurse Manager (ANM), is accountable for the deliveryof patient care services in support of the strategic plan of theorganization and achieves clinical and service quality objectives,in a clinical unit or care delivery site. This role is accountablefor the quality of clinical services delivered, for the competencyand performance of the nursing staff, and for designing andmaintaining systems to support multidisciplinary team functioningand continuity of services within a product line, while working incoordination with the Nurse Manager. The ANM serves as a keyparticipant in organizational project team and work groups at theorganizational and unit level.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Helps to manage and evaluate the system of care delivery andclinical services on one or more patient care units which helps tomeets clinical and service quality objectives alongside the NurseManager. In collaboration with medical staff leadership, assessesrequirements for care delivery systems to meet changing patientpopulation requirements. Plans strategies and services to meetclinical program objectives. Communicates long and short-term plansand objectives to staff under the direction of the NurseManager. Ensures excellence of clinical practice and patient careservices, including meeting or exceeding customer requirements,improving clinical outcomes and achieving productivity and expensereduction goals. Assures that programs, services and staffperformance meet regulatory requirements and professionalstandards. In collaboration with Nurse Manager, supports unit basedprofessional practice partnership(s) which are designed around therequirements of customers (patient, physicians and payors) andwhich involve staff in decision making and unit operations. Develops effective administrative, coordination andcommunication systems. Ensures effectiveness of unit operationsalongside the Nurse Manager. Collaborates with multidisciplinary team members to assess,redesign and continually improve effectiveness and productivity ofclinical programs. Assumes a leadership role in managing the quality of servicesprovided at the unit level. Implements systems to assess and respond to customerperceptions of service. Is visibly involved in obtaining customerfeedback, incorporating customer requirements into service designand requiring staff performance which meets customerrequirements. Implements systems to manage and improve the performance ofunit level processes and to improve the performance, consistencyand coordination of cross functional processes. Teaches and coaches staff in effective process analysis andimprovement techniques and in using data to assess and improve unitperformance. Provides leadership visibility and presence duringnon-traditional shifts, working alongside the manager to maintainemployee/supervisor relationships, and also assists in balancingtime management for nurse manager. Assistant Manager is on-point to provide on-site coverage forthe Manager when they are off-site for any protracted period. Manages human and fiscal resources to meet financial goals andachieve identified outcomes. Effectively participates in the development, communication,monitoring and management of personnel on the unit. Effectively incorporates patient care requirements, into thedevelopment of unit-based orientation processes and on-boardingplans. Coordinates with Nurse Manager to ensure maximal effectivenessand efficiency of staffing plan for unit, including skill mix andscheduling. Develops and maintains leadership relationships with staff, inorder to support healthy workplace environment and culture, andpromote staff retention. Develops and implements clinical utilization strategies whichsupport clinical pathways, discharge planning and case management. Under the direction and supervision of the Nurse Manager.,develops and implements effective human resource managementstrategies. Collaborates to direct systems for orientation, competencyvalidation, professional development and staff recognition. Upholds effective performance management systems which provideclear expectations to staff in all roles, support staffparticipation in peer feedback and effectively address individualand group performance outcomes. Creates an atmosphere which fosters team work and opencommunication among staff. Models effective behaviors as afacilitator, coach and group leader. Creates a unit based climate which values and supportsdiversity and demonstrates career development and promotion ofminority staff. Demonstrates leadership in supporting the implementation ofautomated clinical and administrative information managementsystems. Directs the implementation of unit level process changesto facilitateimplementation and realize the value of automatedsystems. Interprets and enforces hospital and nursing policies,practices, procedure with staff, patients, public and other membersof the health team in a consistent, equitable manner. Supports innovation in clinical practice and care deliverysystems by staying current with innovations and literature inhealthcare and care delivery. Disseminates and incorporatesresearch findings into practice. Supports data-based ideas andinnovations generated by staff and multidisciplinary researchprojects at the unit level. Interprets organizational goals and objectives to staff.

Translates organizational mission, values and priorities into goalsand objectives at the unit level. Identifies implications ofexternal environment for the organization and unit. Facilitatesstaff discussion and response to issues which effect nursingpractice and care delivery. Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications Licensure/Certification/Registration Required:

Current license in good standing as a RegisteredNurse in Maryland or a compact state.

Assistant Nurse Manager Preferred:

Certified in area of nursing specialty

5-7years Experience (describe required & preferred): Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. Minimum of 3 yearsof related clinical experience, if in possession of a Bachelor’sDegree or higher in Nursing or a minimum of 5 years of experience,if in possession of an Associate’s Degree. Demonstrated ability to assess current nursing services andactivities in a clinical setting and evaluate and developcorrective and clinically appropriate action plans. Ability toestablish and maintain effective professional relationships withthe healthcare team. Ability to communicate effectively in Englishorally and in writing.
