Category Schools – Orientation and Mobility Specialist Job Type Contract A K-12 school in Westfield, MA is seeking an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (OMS) for a contract position spanning the full school year (NSY). This role requires a dedicated professional to provide specialized support to students with visual impairments, promoting their independence and confidence in navigating indoor and outdoor environments.
Key Responsibilities:
Assess students’ orientation and mobility needs and develop individualized programs. Provide direct instruction in the use of mobility aids such as canes and electronic devices. Train students in safe and effective travel techniques within school and community settings. Collaborate with teachers, parents, and other specialists to integrate mobility goals into educational plans. Monitor and document student progress, adjusting strategies as necessary. Attend relevant meetings and professional development sessions.
Qualifications:
Certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) or equivalent credential. Experience working with K-12 students who are visually impaired. Strong communication and interpersonal skills to engage effectively with students, families, and school staff. Ability to develop individualized educational and mobility plans. Knowledge of current best practices in orientation and mobility for visually impaired individuals.
