The Reclamation Specialist in the Mining & Solid Waste Division, Bureau of Land & Waste Management, plays a key role in protecting South Carolina’s land by overseeing mining permits and ensuring responsible site restoration. From reviewing mine plans to guiding reclamation efforts you’ll have the opportunity to collaborate with sate and local partners, operators and the public.
Responsibilities:
Using prescribed methods, performs technical review on applications for mine operating permits and reclamation plans to ensure consistency with the Mining Act & Regulations.
Performs inspections and necessary follow-ups on all mining operations in assigned area to ensure compliance with the S.C. Mining Act & Regulations, the mine operating permit, and the approved reclamation plan.
Be a subject matter expert on reclamation practices and provide advice and guidance to staff and the mining industry on how to successfully reclaim mine sites.
Provides technical assistance to the mining industry on the mining and reclamation plans. Assists regulatory agencies, consultants, public officials, mining operators, and the general public regarding mining and reclamation requirements. Conducts conferences and technical meetings with industry officials and consultants.
Responsible for working with other regulatory agencies, non-governmental organizations, and the general public through meetings, hearings, written correspondence, site visits, and verbal communications regarding the technical review of applications for mine operating permits.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum and Additional Requirements
A high school diploma and experience in environmental health programs or radiological health.
Bachelor’s Degree in natural or physical sciences, mathematics, public health, engineering or a related field may be substituted for work experience.
Note:
Degrees in a related technical field include, but are not limited to, Earth sciences, chemistry, biology, physics, soil science, environmental science, mathematics, etc.
Institutions of Higher Learning must be recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.

Additional Requirements:
Knowledge of personal computers, particularly word processing and Excel. Ability to write technical reports and permits. Ability to work closely with permittees, professional consultants, elected officials, general public, and others, as needed.

Certified Erosion Prevention & Sediment Control Inspector
Bachelor’s Degree in natural or physical sciences, mathematics, public health, engineering or a related field may be substituted for work experience.
