JOB TITLE:

Ophthalmic Technician

OVERVIEW

Tests and measures eye function to assist Ophthalmologist to diagnose and treat eye disorders and disease by performing the following duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Tests patient’s far acuity, near acuity, peripheral vision, depth perception, and color perception. Examines eye for abnormalities of cornea, and anterior and posterior chambers. Applies drops to anesthetize, dilate, or medicate eyes. Measures intraocular pressure of eyes (glaucoma test). Tests patient’s field of vision, including central and peripheral vision, for defects, and charts test results on graph paper. Measures axial length of eye. Performs other tests and measurements as requested by Ophthalmologist. Gives instructions to patients concerning eye care. Fill Rx in compliance with physician’s supervision. Enter patient information into NextGen system for accurate record keeping. Responds promptly to patient needs. Maintains confidentiality. Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required Knowledge of ocular diseases and systemic diseases affecting the eye. Knowledge of ultrasound, visual field, and other machines used for testing. Knowledge of basic eye care and hygienic methods and practices involving the treatment of the eye. Strong organizational and interpersonal skills including the ability to manager interactions with difficult people. Knowledge of medical terminology.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, SKILLS

Associate’s degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two year college or technical school; six months to one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Certification by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology preferred but not required. Excellent computer skills in a Microsoft Windows environment. NextGen (EMR and PM) preferred
