FUNCTION
This individual is responsible for performing an extensive number of data-collection functions, as delegated by the physician, to allow for proper, professional diagnosis of patients’ conditions.

JOB QUALITY REQUIREMENTS 1.
Communication & Patient Care a. Interacts with all patients using the level of respect and professionalism required by this practice. b. Acquaint all new patients with the office procedures to which they will be exposed. Inform patients of the purpose of all tests personally performed and how they will be affected during the tests. c. Learn to obtain patient history to include chief complaint, history of present illness, past history (ocular and general), family history (ocular and general), and history of allergies and medications. d. Learn to perform accurate and consistent documentation and measurement tasks to include: Visual Acuity Lensometry Applanation Tonometry Confrontational Visual Field Testing Stereo Testing Evaluation of Motility Pupillary Function Tests Color Plates Accurate Refractometry Angle Assessment Dilation of Pupils Schirmers Amsler Grid Administer topical and oral medication under direct supervision of a physician Humphrey Visual Field Testing e. Learn to perform other testing and tasks specific to the physician’s clinic needs. f. Learn the steps necessary to educate all cataract evaluation patients regarding what a cataract is and how they are removed using eye model or photo as an educational tool. Be able to briefly describe mono-focal vs. multi-focal lenses g. Learn the duties of an ophthalmic scribe. 2. Coding a. Learn coding and requirements for specific codes and modifiers b. Learn documentation requirements for E & M coding c. Learn how to be consistently accurate in coding patient’s visits 3. Administrative a. Seek advice from more senior staff as necessary; never performing beyond capabilities. b. Maintain stock levels and cleanliness of exam lanes. c. Perform other duties, as required. 4. Work Culture a. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization. 7. Triage a. Determines which patient should be taken next from the waiting room to have testing initiated b. Escorts patients from the waiting room for the data collection c. Following testing, advises as to who will see them next and makes them comfortable during the wait d. Maintains a smooth flow of patients to the physician, altering the test sequence as required e. Escorts patients from the clinical area to the check-out station or optical dispensary, when necessary f. Addresses all clinic callbacks by the end of the session in which they were received; insuring proper chart documentation g. Under direction of physician, may call pharmacy with either new or prescription refills which will be properly recorded in patient’s chart 8.

QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma Three to six months related experience preferred Valid proof of JCAHPO certification as an Ophthalmic Assistant.
