  • OD RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Prescribe medications, low visionrehabilitation, vision therapy, spectacle lenses, and contactlenses.
  • Counsel patients regarding surgical and non-surgicaloptions that meet their visual needs related to their occupations,avocations, and lifestyle.
  • Doctors must uncover patient’s eye wearneeds and make product recommendations that will help them seetheir best and protect the health of their eyes.
  • Provide visionservices, eye exams.
  • Treat conditions such as nearsightedness,farsightedness, and astigmatism.
  • Prescribe and fit eyeglasses andcontact lenses.
  • Provide low vision aids and vision therapy.
  • Diagnose eye conditions such as glaucoma, cataracts, maculardegeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and conjunctivitis.
  • Prescribemedications for certain eye conditions as allowed according toState guidelines.
  • Participate in pre or post-operative care forpeople who need surgery.
  • Effectively communicate with patients toget detailed case histories.
  • Offer advice and reassurance topatients about vision-related matters.
  • Write referralcommunications to doctors.
  • Act as a liaison with other medicalpractitioners when needed and share in the care of patients withchronic ophthalmic conditions.
  • Effectively transition patients tothe optical in order to communicate information about the patient’sprescription to the Optician or eye wear consultant.
  • Meet salestargets with regard to selling spectacles or contactlenses.
  • QUALIFICATIONS
  • Business acumen, self-discipline, and theability to deal tactfully with patients.
  • Strong attention todetail and manual dexterity.
  • Doctor of Optometry degree from anaccredited optometry school.
  • Successful completion of the NationalBoard examination and a National, Regional, or State clinicalexamination.
