RESPONSIBILITIES

• Prescribemedications, low vision rehabilitation, vision therapy, spectaclelenses, and contact lenses.
• Counsel patients regarding surgicaland non-surgical options that meet their visual needs related totheir occupations, avocations, and lifestyle.
• Doctors must uncoverpatient’s eye wear needs and make product recommendations that willhelp them see their best and protect the health of their eyes.
• Provide vision services, eye exams.
• Treat conditions such asnearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.
• Prescribe andfit eyeglasses and contact lenses.
• Provide low vision aids andvision therapy.
• Diagnose eye conditions such as glaucoma,cataracts, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, andconjunctivitis.
• Prescribe medications for certain eye conditionsas allowed according to State guidelines.
• Participate in pre orpost-operative care for people who need surgery.
• Effectivelycommunicate with patients to get detailed case histories.
• Offeradvice and reassurance to patients about vision-related matters.
• Write referral communications to doctors.
• Act as a liaison withother medical practitioners when needed and share in the care ofpatients with chronic ophthalmic conditions.
• Effectivelytransition patients to the optical in order to communicateinformation about the patient’s prescription to the Optician or eyewear consultant.
• Meet sales targets with regard to sellingspectacles or contact lenses.

• QUALIFICATIONS

• Business acumen,self-discipline, and the ability to deal tactfully with patients.
• Strong attention to detail and manual dexterity.
• Doctor ofOptometry degree from an accredited optometry school.
• Successfulcompletion of the National Board examination and a National,Regional, or State clinical examination.
