POSITION SUMMARY

Instructs group exercise classes in a safe, enjoyable, and positive environment that promotes member wellness and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Leads energizing, fun, safe, and educational group classes, as directed by the supervisor, to accomplish the YMCA mission and goals. 2. Plan, organize, and conduct classes according to skill and fitness level of participants, including basic principles of safe exercise. 3. Incorporate and conduct classes with an emphasis on positive character values consistent with YMCA values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility. 4. Prior to class start time, gather necessary equipment and supplies to conduct class. Return items and clean area. Begin and end classes on time. 5. Builds effective, authentic relationships with members; helps members connect with each other and the YMCA. Models relationship-building skills, including Listen First, in all interactions. 6. Keeps accurate class attendance records and submit to supervisor at program completion. 7. Arrange for qualified substitute if needed and notify supervisor. 8. Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes incident reports as necessary. 9. Attend and participate in all required staff meetings and continuing job training. 10. Visually inspect work area and equipment for safety and risk, report to supervisor, in writing, any problems. 11. Supports The Y’s Healthy Eating and Physical Activity Standards (HEPA), encouraging children, adults and families to adopt a healthy lifestyle and role-models the standards. 12. Communicate with management by using required digital technology to stay connected regarding work-related business. 13. Perform other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

1. Minimum age requirement – 18 years of age 2. High school graduate or equivalent. 3.

Required certifications:

CPR, First Aid, AED, and nationally recognized certification (ACE, NETA, AFAA, NASM) in group fitness instruction or YMCA Foundations of Group Exercise certification. 4. Certification in specific area of expertise. 5. YMCA Healthy Lifestyle Principles certification within 60 days of employment. 6. Prior experience teaching group exercise classes preferred. 7. Complete YMCA of the USA New Employee Orientation e-learning course.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

1. Ability to conduct classes and activities. 2. Ability to perform all physical aspects of the position; including leading class, walking, standing, stepping, kneeling, crouching, bending, reaching, and lifting. 3. The position, by definition, is physically demanding and requires the person to be physically fit.
