Position Highlights:
Provides gentle yoga, meditation and relaxation therapy services. Demonstrates effective teaching methods and styles for cancer patient population. Applies knowledge of anatomy and physiology to the instruction of yoga provided to the specialized cancer population. Must be able to provide small group presentations on topics related to yoga.
Responsibilities:
Provides yoga therapy to Moffitt patients, family members, caregivers, staff and faculty For inpatients, follows all hospital clinical precautions/guidelines prior to entering patient rooms. Reviews patient medical record for appropriateness of yoga or relaxation therapy and determines type of yoga to be provided For inpatients, verifies with the nurse, physician or APP that the patient is cleared for yoga therapy as it pertains to patient’s clinical status. Reviews patient EMR and other clinical documents for clinical contraindications to yoga therapy. Communicates with physicians, nurses and other health care providers regarding yoga therapy for patient. Documents accordingly in the EMR according to guidelines for ancillary clinical staff. Remains current on EMR documentation processes with training sessions and online training. Demonstrates effective teaching methods and styles by applying knowledge of anatomy and physiology to the instruction of yoga for cancer patient population. Cultivates deep relaxation during class. Shares meditation techniques during each class. Provides feedback to all attendee before, during, and/or after class. Recognizes common misalignments of yoga positions and demonstrates techniques for correcting them. Safely provides adjustments to poses as needed. Develops, implements, evaluates, and revises lesson plans and instructional approaches for teaching yoga based on patient needs. Sequences postures for an effective class. Utilizes a range of techniques to assess the skill level of each yoga participant. Adheres to class schedule by arriving on time, and preparing for class by assuring room readiness. Follows Moffitt clinic guidelines for appointment or class cancellation / notification processes. Maintains a soothing and relaxing atmosphere in the room designated for yoga. Coordinates with Clinic Manager on supplies needed and any recommendations to processes or equipment based on national standards. Speaks effectively to a small audience, and participates in internal education programs and community events. Presents in-service and workshops as requested to raise awareness about the benefits of yoga therapy for cancer patients and their caregivers. Assists with creation of educational materials, marketing brochures, calendars and other program materials.
Experience and Credentials:
High School Diploma/GED At least one (1) year experience in yoga instruction, with experience in a health care setting preferred. Previous experience in review of patient medical records or demonstrated familiarity with medical terminology. Good verbal and written communication skills needed. Exhibits professional verbal communication skills and is able to speak to and provide presentations to small audiences. Must demonstrate an understanding of anatomy and ability to adapt instruction based on limitations from surgical procedures, limited ROM, pain. Requires firm knowledge of various yoga techniques. Requires understanding of the specific needs and limitations of cancer patients regarding yoga positions and breathing techniques/exercises.
Preferred Experience:
Prefer experience with yoga in an oncology setting and meditation.
Certifications:
Certified Yoga Instructor or Certified Yoga Teacher BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support)
