Job Summary:
Assures the appropriateselection, dosing, administering and dispensing of medicationorders. Provides supervision for actions of pharmacy technicians,residents, graduates and interns. Interacts with patients,physicians, and nurses concerning various clinical activities inorder to provide proper drug therapy. Functions as Pharmacist inCharge (PIC) in the absence of the Pharmacy Supervisor/Manager.
JobResponsibilities and Requirements:
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Verifies prescription orders and dispenses medications asordered by ensuring the accuracy of entered prescription orders, byperforming DUR/DUE, verifying drug/drug interactions and completingvisual verification of orders.
Transfers prescriptions to and fromother pharmacies following state and federal law requirements.
Compounds prescription medications when necessary and assuresappropriate documentation is completed. Ensures Medication Guides,CMS notices and other documents required by law are distributedwith prescriptions. Monitors medication therapy and makesrecommendations to therapy when appropriate.
- Counsels as required by all state and federal laws and providesinformation on drugs, their pharmacological action, dosage,contraindications, reactions, etc.
to physicians, nurses, patients,and other interested parties. Identifies and completes medicationtherapy management opportunities and recommends, administers, andeducates on immunizations as appropriate. Stays current withprofessional literature and maintains competence required forposition.
- Oversee technical personnel who assist in the preparation,maintenance, and dispensing of medications and supplies. Able toperform all duties of a pharmacy technician. Assist with academicfunctions such as serving as a preceptor for pharmacy students.
- Maintain appropriate inventory of medications and supplies.
Ensure inventory is rotated, expired stock is appropriatelydisposed of and orders are placed in a timely manner.
- Provide support and serve as a resource for nurses, physiciansand other health care providers medication information andeducation.
- Collaborate with leadership to ensure policies and proceduresare reviewed and makes recommendations for improvement.
- Actively assesses the security of medication areas and thecompliance of personnel with established policies, procedures,state and federal laws including record keeping.
Maintainsestablished procedures for quality control and disposal of unusablemedications and hazardous waste. Issue controlled substances andmaintains records as required by law, pharmacy policies andprocedures. Reviews controlled substances records fordiscrepancies/errors and reports discrepancies to appropriateauthority(s).
- Operate cash register, including end of day check out, withminimal shortage/overages. Ensures all insurance claims areprocessed according to policy and procedures. Confirms accuracy ofprescription billing, days’ supply, quantity, MME, source and DAWto avoid audit charge backs and ensure compliance with Fraud Wasteand Abuse (FWA) Laws.
- Contributes to zero medication errors with injury by completionof Near Miss and Occurrence reports. Assists pharmacy supervisor inreviewing medication event reports and identifying and implementingprocess improvement opportunities.
- Provides excellent customer service, counsels patients on druginformation with a high standard of confidentiality and inaccordance with the Health Insurance Portability and AccountabilityAct (HIPAA).
- Precept pharmacy students and residents, as applicable. Works in a constant state of alertness and safe manner. Performs other duties as assigned.

- Pharmacy degree (Pharm.
D; Bachelor of Pharmacy) from an ACPEaccredited school of pharmacy.

Frequent lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing0-25 lbs. Frequent sitting, standing, walking, reaching and repetitivefoot/leg and hand/arm movements. Frequent use of vision and depth perception for distances near(20 inches or less) and far (20 feet or more) and to identify anddistinguish colors. Frequent use of hearing and speech to share information throughoral communication. Ability to hear alarms, malfunctioningmachinery, etc. Frequent keyboard use/data entry. Occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, twisting andgripping. Occasional lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objectsweighing 25-50 lbs. Rare climbing.
