Job DescriptionPurpose of Position:
The Assistant Director of Pharmacy ClinicalOperations, under the direction of the Director of Pharmacy, willassist in formulating, planning, directing, administering,coordinating, and evaluating the Pharmacy services and programs ina hospital or hospital center. The Assistant Director will alsoidentify, promote, and implement safe medication practices forinpatient, outpatient, and satellite pharmacies in coordinationwith other professional and administrative disciplines. Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Assists informulating, developing, implementing, and directing clinicalpharmacy activities involving the review and interpretation of alldrug orders, maintenance of patient medication profiles, andparticipation in direct patient care, and develops patient careevaluation programs relating to drug utilization and effectiveness.2. Assists in formulary management, medication therapy management,utilization management, research, and collaboration with diseasemanagement and medical management. 3. Review and analyze reports onutilization management, and evaluate business needs for dataanalysis. 4. Support the Drug Utilization review program. 5.Assists in the creation of member and provider newsletters and allclinical communications. 6. Assure medication-related practices arebeing done in accordance with written policy and standards ofpractice. 7. Tracks clinical interventions, assembles and evaluatesdepartment documentation metrics. 8. Monitors the medicationreconciliation process. 9. Develop programs to enhance the clinicalskills of the pharmacy department. 10. Develop and oversee pharmacyresidency programs. 11. Develop and oversee patient medicationprograms. Duties & Responsibilities 1. Directs pharmaceuticalpersonnel with respect to compounding and dispensing of drugs, inaccordance with prescribed policies and standards and legalrequirements, requisitioning and procurement of drugs andpharmaceutical supplies, inventory control and maintenance, storageof supplies and their issuance and maintenance of such controls andstandards, orderliness and cleanliness of Pharmacy area, andinspection programs. 2. Participates with the health care settingin formulation and development of policies regarding theevaluation, selection, procurement, storage, distribution, use, andall other matters relating to drugs in the hospital, withconsideration being given to the following: a. Drug Formulary; b.
Evaluations or clinical data on new drugs or preparations for usein health care settings; c. Investigational drug protocols; and d.
Drugs to be stocked and other related services 3. Assists indeveloping, recommending and implementing pharmaceutical serviceprograms consistent with the medication needs of the patients,including control and accountability of drug products throughoutthe health care setting. 4. Collaborates in the development, makesrecommendations and implements programs of records management,whereby records are correlated with other health care settingrecords, in accordance with the health care setting’s proceduresand practices, such as: a. Transactions of the Pharmacy; b. Recordsystems and bookkeeping, in accordance with accounting departmentstandards; and c. Controls over requisitioning and dispensing ofdrugs and pharmaceutical supplies 5. Assists in formulating,developing, implementing and directing clinical pharmacy activitiesinvolving the review and interpretation of all drug orders,maintenance of patient medication profiles and participation indirect patient care, and develops patient care evaluation programsrelating to drug utilization and effectiveness . 6. Assists in thedevelopment and preparation of financial goals and pharmacy budgetbased on System-wide initiatives and competitive business trends.
Assists in making recommendations regarding staffing patterns. 7.Communicates and manages relationships across the System to promotestaff engagement and offer support. 8. Assists in selection of thePharmacy personnel, guides them in their performance, trains andreviews their performance, makes recommendations regarding theefficiency of department personnel (their performances, potentialand development), and follows through in accordance with System’spolicies and programs in personnel and labor relations on suchmatters as compensation, classification, training programs,discipline, employee morale, grievance resolution, etc. 9. Workswith Director of Pharmacy Services to maintain all pharmacyaccreditations and ensure compliance. 10. Assists developsinformation and in-service training programs for nursing andmedical staff with respect to drug therapy and side effects. 11.Participates in the preparation and review of System-wide policiesand procedures, as related to Pharmacy initiatives. 12.Participates and assists in community events, such as brown bag,flu pods and others as requested by Pharmacy or System leadership.13. Stays current with professional organizations and governingregulatory bodies as it affects the scope of practice of licensedPharmacy professionals. 14. Performs related duties, as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications 1. Valid license and current registration topractice as a Pharmacist issued by the New York State Department ofEducation (NYSED); and 2. Four (4) years of satisfactory full-timeexperience as a licensed practicing Pharmacist, of which at leasttwo (2) years shall have been in an administrative, managerial orsupervisory capacity in a Pharmacy in a hospital, health or medicalfacility.
