The Hospital Pharmacy Technician plays a vital role in supporting the safe, accurate, and efficient preparation and distribution of medications under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist. This position is responsible for inventory management, operating automated dispensing systems such as Pyxis, and ensuring compliance with hospital policies, state and federal regulations, and pharmacy standards.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Prepare, label, and package medications in accordance with pharmacy protocols and under direct pharmacist supervision. Restock and manage inventory in Pyxis MedStations, ensuring proper stock levels and monitoring expiration dates. Process medication orders through the electronic health record (EHR) system and ensure timely delivery to nursing units. Participate in inventory control activities including receiving, stocking, and rotating medications and supplies. Assist with controlled substance distribution and documentation in accordance with DEA and hospital regulations. Maintain accurate records for medication transactions, inventory logs, and pre-packaging documentation. Respond to inquiries from nurses and physicians in a courteous and timely manner. Contribute to hospital initiatives related to quality assurance, infection control, and workplace safety. Collaborate with pharmacists and clinical staff to ensure safe and effective medication use. Support Pyxis troubleshooting, maintenance, and user assistance as needed.

Required Skills/Abilities:

Must have the ability to function optimally in a stressful environment, and the ability to remain calm in emotionally charged situations. Proficient in Microsoft Office applications Previous experience in a hospital pharmacy setting. Familiarity with Pyxis MedStations or similar automated dispensing systems. Knowledge of barcode medication administration (BCMA), EHR systems, and pharmacy inventory software. Ability to multitask, prioritize responsibilities, and work efficiently in a fast-paced healthcare environment.

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent. Active Pharmacy Technician license/registration with the State of Connecticut.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to move light objects weighing less than 20 pounds for short distances. Ability to sit at a desk and walk around for different periods of time.
