The role you’ll contribute:
Primary responsibility is direct oversight and leadership of pharmacy technicians and related day-to-day pharmacy operations including technician schedules, personnel assignments and activities, medication dispensing programs, pharmacy automation, and medication storage processes to ensure effective and timely provision of pharmacy services and medication therapy.
Responsible for the quality of pharmacy services and technical pharmacy staff activities on assigned shifts, including staff customer service, staff communication, standardized work processes, operational process hand-off, and continuity between shifts and across practice areas. Actively participates in operations and assumes pharmacy technician staffing roles to ensure accurate and timely medication services are provided to patients and to support technician staffing shortages. Collaborates with management to support all pharmacy operational areas, including central dispensing pharmacies, satellite dispensing pharmacies, decentralized care areas, and specialty pharmacy areas. Oversees and delivers education to staff, enforces departmental and institutional policies, and initiates development plans or corrective actions as needed and in collaboration with the manager as appropriate. Creates budgetary staffing plan and supports departmental budget activities. Acts as a hiring manager for technician staff. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all. Current certification from a Nationally recognized Board/Association

c. Scheduling for technician float pool
d. Scheduling of techs for new and remedial training at The Lab
e. Secondary trainer for The Lab
Manages pharmacy technicians, pharmacy technician supervisors, and pharmacy technician programs. Prioritizes workload, organizes workflow, completes daily assignments, and checks accuracy of pharmacy technician activities. Intervenes as needed to optimize pharmacy services
Manages and maintains operational expertise in, and may actively provide coverage of, and proactively supervise the technician services provided by:
- Central/distributive operations
- Sterile compounding
- Decentral/delivery operations
- Controlled substances handling
- Hazardous Medication Compounding
- Quality Assurance & Sampling
- Technician Inventory Check
- Medication History
- Clinical Services
- Designated Trainer
- Quality Assurance Auditing
Demonstrates desire and aptitude for and maintain mastery in, instructing, modeling, and coaching others
Precepts and mentor’s pharmacy technician students, IPPE/APPE students and pharmacy interns
Manages nursing unit inspections, medication expiration date monitoring, and all appropriate compliance logs
Develops and updates work instructions and standard operating procedures
Understands how to handle process and appropriately dispose of all waste materials, including all levels of hazardous waste, within the department.
Knowledgeable about the appropriate use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Hazardous Medication Spill Kits in the event of a cytotoxic spill
Facilitates medication safety practices by identifying and reporting potential medication errors such as look-alike sound-alike medications
Supports regulatory compliance initiatives and supports institutional accreditation processes
Collaborates with pharmacy purchasing team to manage medication inventory appropriate to meet patient care needs
Creates a budgetary staffing plan annually to model any adjustments in the pharmacy technician model that may have occurred or are expected to occur in the next calendar year
Maintains personnel staffing levels within established budgetary parameters and facilitates scheduling to optimize pharmacy services and minimize premium labor
Identifies practice-related and quality issues which require evaluation
Supports practice advancement initiatives, clinical research projects, and stewardship initiatives led by colleagues and peers
Works as an active member of pharmacy programs and multidisciplinary team to optimize care and improve services
Identifies, resolves, and reports short and long-term obstacles to patient care, medication safety, regulatory compliance, or stewardship or resources
Supports and participates in medicationuse process improvements led by colleagues and peers
Member of national organizations such as FSHP and ASHP and attends affiliated conferences
Maintains a commitment to pharmacy practice via participation in pharmacy technician professional activities and practice advancement accomplishments.
Supports improvements in and contributions to pharmacy practice
Maintains competent, skilled and cooperative staff by coaching and mentoring all employees
Supports and develops technician supervisors as leaders in the department.
Leads or assists supervisors with the recruitment, interview, and hiring processes as appropriate
Develops a harmonious and satisfied staff by facilitating engagement initiatives
Manages, monitors, and evaluates staff performance to ensure accuracy and quality of services
Provides feedback and counseling regarding job performance including employee discipline if needed.
Complete performance evaluations for direct reports
Manages the technician schedules and staff requests for time off
Qualifications
The expertise and experiences you’ll need to succeed:
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
Bachelor’s Required
Bachelor’s Physical science, business or healthcare Preferred
Master’s of Science, Master of Health Administration, Master of Business Administration, or other advanced degree in science, business, healthcare, or leadership Preferred
5 Contemporary hospital pharmacy experience Required
Strong verbal and written communication, organizational, problemsolving, and customer service skills
Flexibility and willingness to adapt to changes as necessary
Ability to interact constructively with supervisors, peers, and external customers
Ability to follow direction from formal management personnel and informal supervisors (pharmacists) and at times, to work well without direct supervision
Ability to identify, follow up, and resolve discrepancies
Ability to identify, resolve, and mitigate pharmacy operational or program issues
Ability to keep accurate and complete records
Knowledge of medical terminology
Ability to teach pharmacy technician students
Proficiency in hospital computer system technology and automation
Knowledge and competence in aseptic techniques chemotherapy product compounding (if applicable)
Initiative to keep abreast of and communicate developments in the provision of pharmacy services
Ability to coordinate and manage small groups of people in determining in the provision of pharmacy services
Leader qualities essential to operate effectively within the institution and advance the practice of pharmacy
Ability to define operational or program problems/needs and solutions
Ability to integrate clinical and distributive pharmacy services with quality improvement, teaching, research, and professional development activities
