POSITION SUMMARY
The Oral Pharmacy Technician manages oncology medication inventory, insurance approvals, and patient financial assistance while coordinating dispensing through the medically integrated dispensary. The role supports both clinical and administrative functions, working closely with patients, providers, and third-party payers to ensure timely access to treatment and proper documentation.
CORE ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Review prescribed oncology treatments using clinical sources (e.g., NCCN, pathology, labs) and payer guidelines. Obtain and document insurance pre-authorizations for new and existing patients in the electronic medical record. Coordinate and upload treatment documentation to support billing and prior authorization processes. Communicate with patients and insurers regarding financial assistance, copayments, and benefit details. Assess insurance benefits, patient responsibility, and recommend buy & bill or white bagging strategies. Schedule and conduct financial counseling, enrolling patients in aid, charity, or compassionate use programs. Apply for and track compassionate use and replacement drug shipments from manufacturers. Collect required signatures on financial forms (e.g., AOB, treatment estimates, assistance applications). Support prescription refill processes and collaborate with providers on medication needs. Assist with pharmacy operations, including compounding, dispensing, and inventory management as needed. Completes documentation and tasks as required by the medically integrated dispensing (MID) accreditation body to ensure compliance with regulatory and quality standards.
Requirements:
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or equivalent required; completion of an accredited pharmacy technician training program preferred. Minimum of 3 years of experience as a pharmacy technician, preferably in an oncology or specialty pharmacy setting. Experience with insurance verification, prior authorizations, and patient financial assistance programs strongly preferred.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSE OR REGISTRATION
Pharmacy Technician License issued by the Florida Board of Pharmacy required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS OR ABILITIES
Strong understanding of oncology medications, chemotherapy protocols, and medically integrated dispensing practices. Knowledge of insurance processes including prior authorizations, copay assistance, and reimbursement policies. Familiarity with electronic medical records (EMR), pharmacy systems, and relevant compliance and accreditation standards (e.g., ACHC, USP).
