Videos Duties The duties of the Pharmacy Technician include, but are not limited to the following: Properly handles medicions by ensuring high alert, hazardous, refrigered, and controlled substance medicions are handled/stored appropriely and legally. Maintains, verifies, stocks, and replaces outdes in assigned areas. Monitors refrigeror temperure daily in assigned areas. Assists with inventory management, maintaining stock levels and ordering of medicions. Prepares medicions th requires special handling and documention. Obtains proper medicion or merial in the proper strength and dosage form; determines proper amount and counts, pours, or measures the medicions; affixes proper label; and records required da on order. Dispenses medicions and supplies after a final check by a pharmacist using proper pient identifiers. Delivers finished prescriptions to correct pient and/or caregiver using proper pient identifiers. Correctly packages prescriptions for mailing. Assists in receiving, checking, and stocking medicions and supplies. Assists other team members in various job-reled duties and responsibilities. Maintains cleanliness and neness of the work area. Identifies and reports failure of automion. Fills prescriptions utilizing the robotics. Packages, compounds, or assembles drugs and supplies th are not stocked in the automed robotics.

This includes when assigned:

prosthetic pharmacy prescriptions, wound care orders, and compounded prescriptions. Responsible for daily metering of and preparion of mail out packages. Compounds and/or reconstitutes oral or external medicions (non-sterile) without a second review. This includes calculing and converting to proper weights and measures the amount of drug or solution to be used. Answers questions from pharmacy and non-pharmacy personnel regarding drug distribution. Identifies basic therapeutic problems such as duplice therapy with drugs in the same class and alerts the pharmacist to the possible need for clinical intervention. Answers telephones and answers pients’ questions. Provides individual training and guidance to lower-level technicians/students in Outpient Pharmacy section. Processes prescription refills in VISTA. Is proficient in the use of the pharmacy package in VISTA and is able to investige common issues (i.e., whether a prescription was mailed or filled for window pickup. Files documents correctly each day for easy retrieval. Performs all duties of lower graded technicians, if required. Other duties as assigned.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS

Pharmacy Technician candides must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed. Grandfhering Provision. Pharmacy technicians employed in VHA on the effective de of this qualificion standard are considered to have met all qualificion requirements for the title, series and grade held, including positive educion and licensure/certificion/registrion th are part of the basic requirements of the occupion. For employees who do not meet all the basic requirements in this standard but who met the qualificions applicable to the position the time they were appointed to it, the following provisions apply: Employees may be reassigned, promoted up to and including the full performance (journey) level or changed to lower grade within the occupion but may not be promoted beyond the journeyman level or placed in supervisory or managerial positions. Employees in an occupion th requires a licensure/certificion/ registrion only higher grade levels must meet the licensure/ certificion/registrion requirement before they can be promoted to those higher grade levels. Employees who are appointed on a temporary basis prior to the effective de of the qualificion standard may not have their temporary appointment extended or be reappointed on a temporary or permanent basis until they fully meet the basic requirements of the standard. Employees who are converted to title 38 hybrid stus under this provision and subsequently leave the occupion lose protected stus and must meet the full VA qualificion standard requirements in effect the time of re-entry to the occupion. GRADE DETERMINATIONS

Pharmacy Technician, GS-03 Educion and Experience One year of post-secondary educion Or, Six months of general experience Or, Student Technician. A student enrolled in an approved nionally accredited pharmacy technician program for an occupion identified in 38 U.S.C. 7405(a)(1)(A) or (B) may be appointed on a temporary full-time, part-time or intermittent basis under the provisions of 38 U.S.C. 7405(a)(1)(D) for a period not to exceed two years or the durion of the individual’s program. Pharmacy Technician, GS-04. Educion and Experience Completion of two years of post-secondary coursework reled to pharmacy (e.g., 12 semester hours of science and mhemics courses) Or, Completion of one of the following: Six months of experience, th demonstred knowledge of medicion or medical field practice Or Successful completion of a military or nionally recognized pharmacy technician educion/training program.
