This role focuses onproviding pharmacy related services in a hospital or retailsetting. In addition, this role focuses on performing the followingPharmacy Services duties: Delivers pharmaceuticals. Includesprofessionals who are trained and sometimes licensed to dispensemedicine/controlled substances. An organizational related supportor service (administrative or clerical) role or a role that focuseson support of daily business activities (e.g., technical, clinical,non-clinical) operating in a “hands on” environment. The majorityof time is spent in the delivery of support services or activities,typically under supervision. An experienced level role thatrequires basic knowledge of job procedures and tools obtainedthrough work experience and may require vocational or technicaleducation. Works under moderate supervision, problems are typicallyof a routine nature, but may at times require interpretation ordeviation from standard procedures, and communicates informationthat requires some explanation or interpretation. Job OverviewUnder the general supervision of a pharmacist, this role performspharmacy-related functions in compliance with department policiesand procedures that provide optimal pharmaceutical care. This roleis responsible for providing pharmacy services, including, but notlimited to preparing pharmaceuticals, distributing pharmaceuticals,performing inventory control, compliance audits, financialtransactions, providing customer service, and maintaining pharmacyrecords. This role is also responsible for assisting with ordering,receiving, and inspecting medication and supplies.
Job DescriptionMinimum Qualifications:
1. High school diploma or equivalent. 2.Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT). 3. Massachusetts PharmacyTechnician Registration. 4. One (1) year of pharmacy-relatedexperience.
Preferred Qualifications:
1. Associate’s degree. 2. Two(2) Years of pharmacy-related experience in a hospital setting.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities listedbelow are intended to describe the general nature of work and arenot intended to be an all-inclusive list. Other duties andresponsibilities may be assigned. 1. Participates in non-complexsterile and non-sterile medication preparation activitiesincluding: Preparing oral liquids and other extemporaneous dosageformulations following a master formulary sheets or label;Preparing sterile compounds following a recipe or productioninstructions. 2. Operates advanced, automated technology to assistin preparation and documentation of sterile products. 3. Picksmedications for automated dispensing cabinet replenishmentaccurately and with reasonable speed. 4. Completes inventorymanagement activities which include properly securing, storing, andmaintaining all required records. 5. Fills floor stock remoteorders (i.e., Operating Room, Emergency Room, etc.) accurately (asdetermined by pharmacist check). 6. Maintains storeroom areasassuring that supplies in short supply are ordered and thatoutdated medication is removed from stock immediately. Replenishesactive stock from back-up stock as needed. 7. Restocks medicationsinto automated dispensing cabinets in appropriate patient careareas accurately and in a timely manner. 8. Manages emergencymedication inventory in carts/kits, including ordering andmaintaining adequate supply, accurately restocking, organizing toensure consistent placement and uniformity, documenting medicationsused for charge purposes, removal of expired/damage products, andperforming regular checks on each unit. 9. Maintains medicationrooms by ensuring all appropriate medications are stocked inpatient specific bins in the automated dispensing cabinets and byremoving expired and discontinued medications. 10. Empties returnbins in the automated dispensing cabinets as part of the weeklyschedule. 11. Utilizes the unit-dose machine to package bulkmedications and appropriately compounds non-sterile medicationsfollowing standard formulas and procedures. 12. Performs assignedcycle counts of the carousel on a regular basis, maintainingadequate records of completion. 13. Takes accountability formedication management in their assigned patient care area. 14.Assists in keeping the Pharmacy neat and clean by caring forequipment and cleaning after compounding prescriptions,manufacturing bulk medications, unit dosing, etc. 15. Conducttemperature inspections of the refrigerator in the automateddispensing machine. 16. Performs financial transaction activitieswhich may include: Preparing patient billing information; billingthird party prescription benefits; Troubleshoots insurance issues;and selects and uses pharmacy pay codes, payers and plansappropriate to each type of transaction. 17. Inspects assignedmedication storage areas monthly maintaining adequate records ofinspection. All assigned areas must be inspected every month tomeet standard. 18. Greets and assists customers upon arrival to thepharmacy. Participates in point of sale cash transactions. Engagesin customer services activities. 19. Provides customer or patientassistance over the phone. Triage calls as appropriate. 20. Allassigned work is completed accurately by the end of each shift andall necessary quality control paperwork is completed accurately andwith reasonable speed. 21. Communicates effectively with nursing,physicians, and ancillary services to meet the needs of thesedepartments and maintains a positive working relationship and imageof the pharmacy department. 22. Maintains collaborative, teamrelationships with peers and colleagues in order to effectivelycontribute to the working groups achievement of goals, and to helpfoster a positive work environment.
Physical Requirements:
1.Ability to walk and stand 90% of the day and to occasionally liftup to 30 lbs. 2. Frequent reaching and grasping below, at, andabove shoulder level. 3. Pushing and/or pushing non-motorizedequipment (e.g. carts, IV rolling rack, and medication rollingracks, etc.) weighing 40 to 60 lbs. 4. Requires manual dexterityusing fine hand manipulation to operate prescription medicationsand computer keyboard. 5. Ability to see medications, computerscreen, and reports. 6. Reading automated dispensing reportsregularly. 7. Works in an area with some discomfort due to dust,dirt, and temperature changes. 8. May be exposed to broken glassand some exposure to hazardous chemicals.
Skills & Abilities:
1.Ability to be organized and systematic. 2. Ability to communicateeffectively. 3. Ability to perform work in a timely and efficientmanner. 4. Possess excellent telephone etiquette skills. 5.Knowledge of hazardous substance handling, complex sterilecompounding techniques, and mathematical calculations. 6.
Extensiveknowledge of medications including:
