Monday-Friday 8am-5pm
Pay Range:
$20-22 per hour, dependent on experience
SUMMARY OF JOB DUTIES
The Lead Phlebotomist will enforce training and competencies for all phlebotomists. Travel to labs to ensure training and scheduling. Strategize with Phlebotomy Supervisor to solve any staffing issues. Requisition lab orders. Performs sterile venipuncture for the collection of blood samples from patients. Works in a variety of different capacities to collect these blood samples, but this is always their major focus. Prepares samples for a variety of different tests and procedures. Process certain tests to obtain patient results. Works well with patients and helps to keep them calm by properly explaining procedures and actions.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Assist Phlebotomy Supervisor with training when of phlebotomy staff and continue competency to ensure proper protocol on all procedures are being performed. Travel when necessary to train or cover phlebotomy shifts. Coordinate with Phlebotomy Supervisor for scheduling the phlebotomy staff to ensure each lab is staffed accordingly. Assembles equipment for drawing blood, such as needles, tourniquet, gauze, blood collection devices, cotton, and alcohol, according to test or procedure requirements. Applies tourniquet, inserts needle into vein or pricks finger, draws blood into collection bag or tube, and applies treatment to puncture site. Assures cleanliness of the draw area, properly apply pressure and makes sure area is safe and clean after the blood is drawn. Labels and stores blood containers in accordance with established procedures and protocols and enters necessary information into the computer system in order to maintain proper specimen integrity. Collect throat culture specimens as necessary. Conducts medical testing procedures to screen blood samples. Converses with patient and/or family to explain and allay fears of procedure. Writes or types test results sent from reference laboratory to patient reports and distributes reports to clinicians. Applies knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures and systems such as word processing systems, filing and records management systems, forms design principles, and other office procedures and terminology. Entering, recording, storing, or maintaining information in either written form or by electronic/magnetic recording. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with physicians, nurses and other staff. Answers phone, handles calls from patients, schedules appointments, properly maintains schedules and records and receives patients as necessary. Makes sure that all samples are signed in on the drop-off log. All patients must have an order in the lab assigned to the specific patient. Patients are to be taken into the blood drawing area one at a time in patient sign-in order unless a STAT order is received. Once in the phlebotomy chair the phlebotomist is to confirm by question to the patient two identifiers, ideally being name and date of birth. Proper blood-drawing technique is to be performed according to LabCorp standards. Proper OSHA required protection (gloves) are to be worn at all times. Proper disposal of supplies according to OSHA standards are to be performed at all times. If proper standards are missed or not performed, the phlebotomist is required to report this to management immediately. The patient is to be monitored and proper procedures used to ensure patient safety at all times. If a patient stops breathing, presents seizure, injures self, the phlebotomist is to follow proper protocol immediately. Follow proper technique to secure stick site and make sure that the patient safely exits the chair and lab draw area. Properly dispose of red bag containers in locked bin behind building when 90% full. Sanitize work area every evening or at end of day. Work area must be maintained in a neat and clean manner at all times. Work area must be clear and absent of all potential fall hazards. Food is never permitted in work area. Check with medical staff prior to leaving for the day. Clock in and out every day and clock in and out for lunch when appropriate. Performs other duties as assigned or directed.
Requirements:
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Must have high school diploma copy and Phlebotomy certification. 3 years of phlebotomy experience.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT
The position requires climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, repetitive motions, and finger use. Pushing and pulling are occasionally required. Use of a computer, keyboard, and telephone along with various office machines is an essential part of the job.
