Job Description:
Job Purpose The Phlebotomy Technician must accurately identify patients and perform phlebotomy procedures, following all safety regulations of the institution. The phlebotomist works under the direction of the Pre-analytical Coordinator, Medical Technologists, or Medical Technicians.
Essential Job Functions Technical:
Identify patients as outlined in SOP. Knowledge of common specimen requirements for the Oncology clinic and order of draw. Converse with patient to allay fear of procedure. Collection of specimens from peripheral veins, Port-A-Caths, or intravenous lines using the collection sets available. Perform POC testing and QC documentation. Working knowledge of LIS and EMR systems. Provide patient instruction and necessary equipment for collection of stool and urine specimens. Assist patients to the appropriate location after they are done in the lab.
QA/QC/Regulatory:
Perform competency testing for POC equipment. Participate in continuous improvement activities, examine existing processes/procedures, and look for ways to improve them. Adhere to all regulatory standards within the clinical laboratory. Demonstrate annual competency. Perform other general duties as required.
Safety/Organizational/Productivity:
Follow institution’s safety procedures. Follow Universal Precautions, wear PPE. Must be able to multitask with maximum efficiency and minimal waste. Answer questions from patients, physicians, and nursing staff regarding clinical laboratory. Participate in the introduction and evaluation of new supplies and equipment. Train new phlebotomists as required.
Communication/Teamwork:
Maintain positive working relationship with fellow staff and clinic personnel. Acts independently and accepts responsibility of the clinical laboratory’s policy and procedures. Must be able to interact well with patients, employees, physicians and management. Qualifications Must have excellent communication skills, both oral and written Must have excellent organizational skills, be able to prioritize and manage tasks in a timely and effective manner Must be willing to adapt to a flexible schedule and work environment Education Must have a high school diploma or GED. Completion of a Phlebotomy Technician training program. Must have 1-year phlebotomy experience in clinical laboratory setting. Must have basic computer skills. Working Conditions This position is in the clinical laboratory of a busy outpatient oncology/hematology clinic. This person will be required to work closely with coworkers and management daily. This position requires that the employee handle body fluids and chemicals daily. Physical Requirements This position requires that the employee be able to stand and walk for long periods of time, up to eight hours a day. This position also requires that the employee be able to perform mild physical labor to complete the tasks at hand including pushing patients in wheel chairs and assisting patients up and down from seating. Direct reports This position is not a supervisory position.
