POSITION SUMMARY

The Inpatient Phlebotomist is responsible for performing phlebotomyon inpatients including adults, adolescents, and infants with afocus on patient care, and positive communication with patients,hospital staff and co-workers conducting laboratory tests whichprovide information to physicians for the diagnosis, prevention ortreatment of diseases in patients.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Participates in hospital initiatives and in departmental goalsset by the Laboratory Director and staff.
  • Interacts professionally with laboratory management, laboratorypersonnel, physicians, hospital personnel, patients and customersto provide optimal patient care.
  • Works well with other laboratory employees to maintain anenvironment of teamwork.
  • Exercises all laboratory safety precautions and adheres OSHAand TOSHA safety regulations
  • Positively identifies patients, labels specimens and entersresults using two unique identifiers. Maintains working knowledgeof laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Maintains current knowledge and adheres to hospital policiesand state, federal and other regulatory requirements
  • Responds appropriately to tests with a priority of STAT, callresults or timed specimens
  • Responsible for training new employees and students asassigned.
  • Phlebotomy for inpatients of all ages
  • Collection of state required newborn screening
  • Collection of urine drug screens
  • Use of computer and handheld computer system to properlyidentify patients and document issues.
  • Assisting in other areas of the lab as needed.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Formal Education /

Training:
  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • Phlebotomy training or work experience; phlebotomycertification preferred
Workplace Experience:
  • Good people skills necessary
  • Mobilab experience preferred
Equipment and Skills Training:

Computer, printer, phlebotomy, customer service

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of medical laboratory science
  • Strong organizational skills and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to determine appropriate course of action in morecomplex situations

Positively identifies patients and specimens

  • Selects correct patient in Meditech and handhelds
  • Properly labels specimens using 2 identifiers.
  • Uses handheld computers properly for specimen collection Uses proper technique for specimen collection and ensures propercollection for specimen integrity.

Produces work that does not have to be redone. Blood cultures are volumes are adequate. Average bottle volume is between 5-10m

Blood culture contamination rate is acceptable: Turn Around Time within acceptable time criteria for ER patients.
