Phlebotomist-Clinical Laboratory – Full Time 3.1 3.1 out of 5 stars Belle Glade, FL 33430

General Statement of Job:

This position is responsible for obtaining specimens from patients for analysis and diagnosis of possible health problems.

Essential Functions:

Reviews and processes reference lab work and hospital requisitions as needed. Performs arterial draws and blood draws. Assembles equipment, such as tourniquet, needles, and disposable containers for needles, blood collection devices, gauze, cotton and alcohol on work tray, according to requirements for specialized tests or procedures. Verifies the identity of patient and converses with the patient to relieve any fears regarding the procedure being performed. Applies treatment to the puncture site in accordance with established policies and procedures. Performs various clerical duties for the Clinical Laboratory Department. Mails or faxes reports and test results to physician offices as needed ensuring that patient confidentiality is maintained at all times. Maintains and manages filing system. Performs and collects drug screens from patients. Packages specimens for performance labs ensuring that specimens are labeled correctly and accurately. Delivers laboratory reports to the appropriate nursing service. Orders and stocks basic laboratory supplies as needed. Responds to STATS and ER requests in a timely manner. Maintains patient confidentiality at all times. Demonstrates knowledge of pathogen transmission practices; i.e., follows hand washing policy/procedure, and utilizes protective equipment efficiently and appropriately. Attends and participates in all in-services as required. Participates in the orientation and mentoring of new staff members, recognizing the importance of bringing new staff into a friendly and supportive work environment. Demonstrates understanding and commitment to the hospital mission, philosophy, standards, policies and procedures. Recognizes all staff, physicians and visitors, as well as, patients as customers and provides courteous and respectful service. Documents and reports any complaints from patients/visitors/physicians to supervisor. Participates in the cleanliness of the work environment. Participates in hospital community activities and promotes the hospital within the community. Serves as a change leader, positively promoting changes implemented which improves the hospital and the service provided to its patients. Participates in the hospital goals for growth by being an example of good service to patients in our community and in assisting physicians and other team members. Emergency duty may be required of the incumbent that includes working in special needs or Red Cross shelters or to perform other emergency duties including, but not limited to, responses to threats or disasters, man-made or natural.

Education:

High School Diploma or GED preferred.

Experience:

Minimum two (2) to four (4) months experience required.

Certification:

Medical Assistant or Phlebotomy Certification preferred.
