Job Description
Know How Job Knowledge:
To fulfill the requirements of Clinical Laboratory Phlebotomist position it is encouraged that the incumbent have a nationally recognized certification agency or have previous verifiable experience in a phlebotomy position. The incumbent must demonstrate proficiency in the collection of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients. Reports To (Title) Laboratory Administrator Position(s)
Reporting To This Position None Phlebotomy Supervisor Essential Functions:
Specimen Collection:
Must be able to collect the appropriate specimens for all tests ordered. Must be able to insure correct labeling and identification of all patients / specimens collected.
Result Processing:
Insures the results of tests performed are distributed to the appropriate areas.
Bedside Testing:
Performs bedside blood glucose analysis as needed.
Order Entry:
Insures Out Patient Orders are entered and processed correctly.
Courier:
Performs specimen pick up and delivery to OCH Clinics as needed.
Job Knowledge:
Incumbent must be a certified Clinical Laboratory Phlebotomist with a nationally recognized certification agency or have previous verifiable experience in a phlebotomy position. The incumbent must demonstrate proficiency in the collection of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients. To fulfill the requirements of this position, the incumbent must possess the skills necessary to navigate various web sites including but not limited to multiple reference laboratories, blood suppliers, proficiency testing providers, multiple laboratory reagent suppliers, the OCH portal, the OCH document repository, and the hospital=s electronic medical records system. The incumbent must possess the skills necessary to work within the clinical application of the hospital’s electronic medical records system in order to accurately document laboratory results. The incumbent must possess the skills necessary maintain all required user identities and passwords for the above. The incumbent must have a High School Diploma, or GED.
Leadership:
The incumbent is responsible for obtaining the correct specimen in an accurate manner and in a manner that is as comfortable as possible to the patient. The incumbent must be able to perform clerical duties as required
Human Relations Skills:
The incumbent interacts daily with patients, hospital personnel, and medical staff. He/She must possess good communication skills. Problem Solving The incumbent must be able to determine specimen acceptability for any given collection. The incumbent must be able to determine what course of action to take when unable to collect a patient.
Freedom to act:
The incumbent takes necessary actions to insure patients are collected in an accurate and timely manner. Physical Requirements The incumbent must be able to stand for extended periods of time. he/she must be able to lift 20 – 30 lbs. occasionally. Confidentiality, Privacy and Security Oktibbeha County Hospital will train the incumbent on all aspects of the Healthcare Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA). HIPPA training and Certification are requirements of this position. The incumbent will adhere to all security and patient confidentiality rules and regulations mandated by the Federal Government and the State of Mississippi. Upon commencement of employment, the employee must sign a patient Confidentiality and Security Agreement and abide by the Oktibbeha County Hospital Security and Confidentiality, Privacy and Security Policies and Procedures. Failure to adhere to HIPPA Standards, Oktibbeha County Hospital Security and Confidentiality policies , and those set forth by the United States Federal Government, and the State of Mississippi will result in disciplinary action up to and including termination.
