Job Summary A Phlebotomoist will perform standardized and specialty laboratory procedures as ordered for patients. Properly identify patient prior to performing procedures and labeling of specimens. Make laboratory appointments for patient in the electronic health record. Receive and process specimens for point of care testing and send outs. Dispose of blood drawing equipment according to health and safety regulations. Performs and participates in decontamination, cleaning, assembling, packaging, sterilization, storage, and distribution of reusable instruments. Primary Responsibilities Laboratory Services Ensure patient appointment is in electronic health record and test(s) are ordered. Ensure proper patient identification and correct test ordered. Maintain sample identification through all steps of the testing process. Select appropriate site for venipuncture, assemble equipment, and collect specimen(s) using correct order of draw and according to policy and procedures. Use proper cleaning and aseptic technique to collect blood cultures. Recognize the need for patient medical assistance and call for assistance from the clinical staff or provider. Collaborate with outside agencies in regards to STAT pick-ups or other specimen management. Perform and document routine instrument maintenance on select laboratory equipment. Perform and document required quality control activities. Communicate supply needs to lead MA or laboratory supplier as needed. Sterilization Process Decontaminates, sterilizes, and packages instruments, medical supplies and equipment, and assembles, wraps and sterilizes trays of instruments. Follows proper Standard Precautions while in decontamination and sterilization areas. Monitors and logs biochemical testing of autoclave. Maintains a clean work area. Assists with and maintain established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, and quality improvement, safety, and environmental and infection control standards. Education and/or Experience Graduate from an accredited phlebotomist program required. 1-2 years of phlebotomy experience preferred. Certifications, Licenses, or Registrations Current Phlebotomy certificate required. Current CPR certification required. Additional Skills, Knowledge and Responsibilities Excellent verbal and written skills Ability to provide support to the members of the care team (team work) Must possess initiative and ability to work independently Ability to maintain confidentiality of medical records Ability to provide support with compassion and respect for the individual. Ability to prioritize workload, exhibit initiative, and multi-task within the department and across the division is required. Staff must demonstrate appropriate judgment in handling daily assignments. Staff will demonstrate appropriate technical skills with the utilization of the electronic health record and office based computer systems. Must demonstrate appropriate customer service orientation in all interactions within the organization and with patients, co-workers, care providers, and visitors. Employee must demonstrate discretion in dealing with medical, fiscal, and personnel information as is appropriate to position. Communicate appropriately using good interpersonal skills. Knowledge of medical terminology related to blood collection. Knowledge of safety practices. Strong attention to detail. Serve as a resource and support for other staff in regards to laboratory or sterilization questions. Other duties as assigned Foreign Language Skills Conversational Spanish preferred. Physical Demands Frequently stands, walks, uses hands to handle or feel, reaches with hands and arms, talks, and listens. Sometimes sits, climbs, and stoops or kneels. Lifts up to 20 pounds on a routine basis. Work Environment Potential for routine exposure to infectious diseases, hazardous chemicals, etc. Moderate noise level typical of a busy clinical office with office/medical equipment and foot traffic.
