Responsibilities Performs blood collection by venipuncture and capillary methods, for a variety of laboratory tests and procedures to be used in diagnosis and treatment of disease. Collects chain of custody drug screens for various companies. Periodically oversees collections performed by phlebotomy or medical assisting students. Performs some registration functions to include patient data entry and order entry as well as specimen receiving, processing, and distribution functions. Provides customer service support to technical staff and laboratory clients. Identify patients appropriately, with two identifiers. Perform patient requisition entry, one-click registrations, and place orders as requested by providers using correct diagnosis information. Collect and label samples correctly. Prepare samples for shipment to reference labs creating packing lists as needed. Collect chain of custody drug screens. Perform therapeutic phlebotomy collections. Clerical duties. Follow written and verbal instructions. Adapt schedule to needs of lab, covering other shifts as needed. Use appropriate safety and infection control measures. Participate in training of phlebotomy students. Responsible for inpatient collections and processing, outpatient collections and processing as well as send-out processing. Participate in weekend call rotation and holiday rotation. Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent required. Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant Program or Phlebotomy Program required. Must be certified or eligible for certification. Minimum of 3 months of phlebotomy experience preferred. Requires a working knowledge of handling blood, body fluids and other lab specimens, according to infection control guidelines. Valid driver’s license with a driving record that meets the criteria to drive a FirstHealth vehicle.
