Phlebotomist I Job Description The Phlebotomist I plays a crucial role in assisting with various duties, troubleshooting, training, and recommending workflow improvements. The position involves collecting and storing specimens according to established procedures while maintaining a courteous and clear explanation of processes to patients. Responsibilities Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, and record maintenance data. Decontaminate and update patient information regularly. Collect and store specimens according to established procedures. Clearly explain the process of venipuncture, blood drawing, and other specimen collections, such as urine or fecal, as required. Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles. Fully understand and follow physicians’ orders. Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes. Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order. Ensure 100% accuracy by checking all test requisitions or computer labels against script. Package specimens for transport and store them according to required temperatures. Place samples in appropriate collection containers/tubes and accurately label them. Follow specific procedures necessary for transport to maintain the integrity of specimens. Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations. Attend annual department trainings. Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries. Essential Skills Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment. Blood draw and venipuncture proficiency. Experience in specimen collection. Minimum of 6 months’ work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite. Additional Skills & Qualifications High School Diploma or GED. 2 years of experience in a related field. Work Environment The role is set in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital environment where attention to detail is paramount. The position requires compliance with safety regulations and participation in annual training sessions. The dress code aligns with standard healthcare attire, ensuring a professional appearance while maintaining safety standards.
