POSITION SUMMARY

The Inpatient Phlebotomist is responsible forperforming phlebotomy on inpatients including adults, adolescents,and infants with a focus on patient care, and positivecommunication with patients, hospital staff and co-workersconducting laboratory tests which provide information to physiciansfor the diagnosis, prevention or treatment of diseases in patients.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Participates in hospital initiatives and in departmental goals setby the Laboratory Director and staff.
  • Interacts professionallywith laboratory management, laboratory personnel, physicians,hospital personnel, patients and customers to provide optimalpatient care.
  • Works well with other laboratory employees tomaintain an environment of teamwork.
  • Exercises all laboratorysafety precautions and adheres OSHA and TOSHA safety regulations
  • Positively identifies patients, labels specimens and enters resultsusing two unique identifiers. Maintains working knowledge oflaboratory policies and procedures.
  • Maintains current knowledgeand adheres to hospital policies and state, federal and otherregulatory requirements
  • Responds appropriately to tests with apriority of STAT, call results or timed specimens
  • Responsible fortraining new employees and students as assigned.
  • Phlebotomy forinpatients of all ages
  • Collection of state required newbornscreening
  • Collection of urine drug screens
  • Use of computer andhandheld computer system to properly identify patients and documentissues.
  • Assisting in other areas of the lab as needed.
POSITIONREQUIREMENTS

Formal Education /

Training:
  • High school graduate orequivalent
  • Phlebotomy training or work experience; phlebotomycertification preferred
Workplace Experience:
  • Good people skillsnecessary
  • Mobilab experience preferred
Equipment and SkillsTraining:

Computer, printer, phlebotomy, customer service

  • Requires light to moderate work with 40pounds maximum weight to lift and carry.
  • Manual dexterity andmobility in both hands; exposed to repetitive motion.
  • Frequentreaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, and crouching.
  • Requiresprolonged standing and walking
  • Flexibility to shift schedule,work extra hours or overtime as needed by staffing deficits or highpatient volumes

Positively identifiespatients and specimens

  • Selects correct patient in Meditech andhandhelds
  • Properly labels specimens using 2 identifiers.
  • Useshandheld computers properly for specimen collection Uses propertechnique for specimen collection and ensures proper collection forspecimen integrity.

Produces work that does not have to be redone.
