Phlebotomist I Job Description The primary role of a Phlebotomist I is to assist in various duties, troubleshoot issues, provide training, and recommend workflow improvements. The individual in this position will perform blood draws, label and centrifuge specimens, update patient information, and ensure proper decontamination. Responsibilities Perform blood draws, label specimens, and centrifuge specimens. Record maintenance data and perform decontamination procedures. Update patient information and collect/store specimens according to established procedures. Explain venipuncture and other specimen collection processes clearly and courteously. Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles. Understand physicians’ orders and match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes. Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order. Verify test requisitions or computer labels against scripts for accuracy. Package specimens for transport and store them at required temperatures. Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and attend annual department training. Respond to telephone inquiries and read laboratory results as needed. Essential Skills Phlebotomy certification (valid for the state of employment). Minimum of 6 months’ experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite. High School Diploma or GED. Additional Skills & Qualifications Geriatric and pediatric experience preferred. Experience in patient care, blood draw, venipuncture, and specimen collection. Specimen processing and medical knowledge. Experience in drawing blood and managing patient information. Work Environment The position involves performing approximately 25 draws per day, with responsibilities across multiple offices within Salisbury. The work environment is dynamic and requires floating between locations.
