Phlebotomist I Job Description The main function of a Phlebotomist I is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations. Responsibilities Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, record maintenance data, and decontaminate areas. Update patient information accurately. Collect and store specimens according to established procedures. Clearly and courteously explain the venipuncture, blood drawing, or other specimen collection processes (e.g., urine or fecal) to patients. Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles. Fully understand and follow all physicians’ orders. Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes. Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders. Check all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure accuracy. Package specimens for transport. Store specimen samples at required temperatures and place samples in appropriate collection containers or tubes. Follow specific procedures to maintain the integrity of specimens during transport. Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations. Attend annual department trainings. Answer telephone calls and provide laboratory results to satisfy inquiries. Essential Skills Phlebotomy certification valid for the state of employment. Minimum of 6 months’ work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite. High School Diploma or

GED. 0-2

years of experience in a related field. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience with pediatric blood draws. Knowledge of specimen processing and collection. Strong patient care skills. Work Environment This position operates in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting. You will be required to use various equipment and technologies for blood drawing and specimen processing. The role may involve interacting with patients of all ages and requires compliance with OSHA and DEP regulations. Annual department training sessions are mandatory.
