Phlebotomist I Job Description The primary role of the Phlebotomist I is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and recommending improvements to work processes. Responsibilities Conduct blood draws, label specimens, and perform centrifuging of specimens. Record maintenance data and perform decontamination procedures. Update patient information and store specimens according to established procedures. Explain the venipuncture process clearly and courteously to patients. Demonstrate techniques using straight and butterfly needles. Understand and follow physicians’ orders accurately. Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes. Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders. Ensure all test requisitions or computer labels match the script with 100% accuracy. Package specimens for transport and store them at the required temperature. Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations. Attend annual department trainings. Answer telephone inquiries and read laboratory results. Essential Skills Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, if required. Minimum of 6 months’ experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite. High School Diploma or
GED. 0-2
years of experience in phlebotomy. Additional Skills & Qualifications 1 year experience with blood draws in high volume settings. Experience working with patients ranging from babies to geriatrics. Reliability and strong work ethic. Work Environment Work in a dynamic and fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting. The role requires adherence to safety and regulatory standards. This position involves working with a diverse range of patients and may require flexible working hours.
