PURPOSE OF POSITION

Under direct supervision of a licensed Nurse or other professional medical staff in a health care setting, performs a variety of health-related essential duties and responsibilities associated with patient care.

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITIES

Medical- Surgical Units

SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Checks vital signs, weighs, and measures patients, obtains specimens, and records results on patient’s chart.
2. Explain to the patients the reason to obtain specimens for laboratory testing.
3. Prepares collected specimens for pick-up by labeling and preparing required form(s).
4. Administers emergency first aid, including basic life support procedures. 5. Performs simple first aid such as applying bandaging.
6. Prepares the patient for examination and assists medical providers during examination by providing necessary supplies/equipment
7. Prepares examination room including cleaning and disinfecting of the equipment to be use
8. Informs patients on proper preparation for various medical testing.
9. Interviews patient to obtain routine personal and medical information and appropriate health history
10. Protect the patients charts, appropriate forms and documents by adhering to HIPPA.
11. Reports observations of the patient to clinical staff caring for the patient to ensure professional assessment. 12. Answers routine inquiries of patients in person or via telephone
13. Provides information to patients and their families regarding health care services and the achievement of healthy and safe living.
14. Changes linen and makes beds. Keep the rooms, unit, utility, treatment and storage rooms in a neat and orderly fashion.
15. Works effectively as a team member in the delivery of care and assists in the orientation of new employees.
16. Directs and escorts patients to other departments and/or health care settings, as needed.
17. Obtains blood specimens for laboratory testing by performing venipuncture and/or fingerstick testing.
18. Proficient in the use and maintenance Infection Control protocol of electrocardiogram and glucose machines
19. Operates electrocardiograph equipment to perform EKG as order by the PMD. 20. Basic knowledge of cardiac monitoring and rhythm
21. Central Station Cardiac monitoring

Minimum Qualifications Qualification Requirements:

1. High school diploma or its educational equivalent, approved by a State’s Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization; and
2. Successful completion of training courses including the performance of phlebotomy and
electrocardiography (EKG), or completion of a training program or programs that include the performance of phlebotomy and EKG, such as Phlebotomy Technician and EKG Technician training programs, a Patient Care training program, or a Medical Assistant training program; and
3. Holds, or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA).
