JobSummaryThis position is for 11 AM
- 7:30 PM Collects specimens from patients and assumes responsibility for thesafety and comfort of patients, following established standards andpractices.
Accessions samples into computer system for accuratetesting and billing and obtains signed documents as needed. Reviewsoutstanding workload reports. Performs Point of Care testing andsample processing if assigned.

Be the difference. Verifies identification of patient and specimen. Properlylabels specimens with required information. Uses correct alternatepatient identification procedures if hospital armband is notavailable (outpatient, use of Typenex bracelets, etc.). Inputs and assesses information via the hospital and laboratorycomputer systems accurately and timely. Reviews collection lists,unreceived lists, tracking logs, and telephone log for completionof work. Takes appropriate action as needed. Instructs patients onpreparation or collection for tests ordered and distributescollection containers when necessary. Organizes and prioritizestasks and uses time efficiently. Follows safety procedures and responds correctly andimmediately to safety violations and safety drills. Reports anddocuments immediately personal exposure to hazardous or infectioussituations. Uses available PPE and safety equipment when needed;disinfects equipment as required. Assures patient safety ismaintained throughout collection/procedure and knows notificationprocess if patient has adverse reaction. Obeys all patientprecautions at bedside or noted on order. Processes specimens for testing including identifying, sorting,aliquoting, centrifuging, and labeling specimens appropriately.
Assures proper storage and retention of all specimens for theirdesignated time. Packages and prepares specimens for transportwhile maintaining appropriate specimen temperature forstability. Restocks an item in use, assuring its availability to the nextperson/shift. Maintains work area in a clean, orderly manner.
Monitors expiration dates of all supplies and reagents and followsestablished protocol. Participates in work unit action plans andsupports department-based goals. Supports customer service, qualityand financial initiatives in a positive and productive manner. Communicates with patients and guests in a timely and courteousmanner. Uses positive interpersonal skills in all patient /customerinteractions. Receives incoming calls, documents incoming requestsfor blood collection or other information, and coordinatescollections as needed. Communicates pertinent information to otherteam members using approved communication methods. Performs account registrations and orders tests in multiplelaboratory systems in a timely manner. Collects appropriateconsents for preauthorizations and Advanced Beneficiary Notice asrequired. Completes clerical duties such as scanning of allrelative patient data and tracking monthly workload performance.
Records orders for lab tests and accurately provides appropriatereports to proper personnel according to compliance regulations.
Communicates with and faxes information to physician officesconcerning orders or billing information. Dispatches or arrangescouriers for pickup. Floats to multiple client locations andpatient service centers. Performs POC testing accurately if assigned, using establishedprotocol and QC. Notifies appropriate caregiver of criticalvalues. Instructs new employees and students in procedure, techniqueand theory as assigned and documents proficiency on checklist.
Informs appropriate person of problems noted in an individual’straining process. Performs other duties as assigned.
Supervisory/ManagementResponsibilities This is a non-management job that will report to a supervisor,manager, director or executive.
Minimum Requirements Education
- High School diploma or equivalent or post-highschool diploma Experience
- Three (3) month phlebotomy certificate programInLieu Of In Lieu of the education and experience requirements notedabove, previous phlebotomy experience or training in formalprograms which include phlebotomy are qualified as candidates maybe considered.
