- Full Time Evenings A Brief Overview
Obtains blood/specimen samples and performs various screening tests.
Collects venous, capillary and micro specimens from patients; prepares and transports specimens and test requests to appropriate laboratories. What you will do
Obtains and prepares specimens and performs tests in accordance with department policies, procedures and standards and with consideration given to risk management, infection control practices, and patient safety practices.
- Performs venous, capillary, puncture and micro-sticks on inpatients and outpatients using proper techniques to prevent nerve damage, blood clots or serious bleeding.
- Visits patient’s bedside to collect blood specimens.
- Calms and reassures patients who are anxious or apprehensive about having blood specimen withdrawn; explains to patient why specimen is needed in order to elicit cooperation.
- Verifies patient’s identification and labels on specimen according to policy.
- Transports specimens and tests requests to appropriate labs.
- Demonstrates knowledge and skills to provide care, maintains clinical competency and meets age-specific patient needs in a caring, compassionate, and sensitive manner.
Interacts and works collaboratively in a customer responsive and courteous manner in compliance with MEDCARE standards and promoting patient/customer satisfaction.
Prepares and maintains required records, reports and files for administrative and compliance purposes.
Maintains equipment, instruments and supplies. Reports malfunction of equipment to supervisor. Maintains a clean, orderly, safe environment for patients and personnel. Assists in the evaluation of new or modified techniques and methods.
Maintains confidentiality in matters relating to patient/family, department and hospital information. Adheres to established department and organization policies (i.e. HIPAA, Confidentiality, and Compliance Policies).
Completes required continuous training and education, including department specific requirements. Responds to problems/opportunities to improve work environment and participates in unit based performance improvement activities.
Provides support and clinical assistance to nursing, laboratory and other departments as needed. Assists in the orientation and supervision of new staff members and students when they provide patient care, treatment and services as part of their training
Provides coverage for relief and absences. Demonstrates flexibility to work nights, weekends and holidays to provide continuous laboratory coverage as required. Qualifications
High School Diploma or equivalent Required and
Completion of an approved Lab Liaison Technician or Phlebotomy Technician training program Required and
Qualified by education, training or experience to work with the neonate, infant, adolescent, adult and/or geriatric patient population as specialty assignment dictates Required
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) within 60 Days Required or
BCLS
- Basic Life Support within 60 Days Required
At least 1 year experience blood collection/phlebotomy experience in a hospital setting Preferred Physical Demands
