DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES A.

Reviews physician’s referral (prescription) and patient’s condition and medical records to determine physical therapy treatment required. B. Assesses (tests and measures) patient’s strength, motor development, gait, sensory perception, functional capacity, ROM and respiratory and circulatory efficiency and records findings to develop or revise treatment programs. Evaluates home environment, performs vital signs and Oximetry as needed. C. Plans, prepares and directs written treatment program based on evaluation of patient data. D. Administers manual exercises to improve and maintain function. E. Instructs, motivates, and assists patients to perform various physical activities and in use of assistant and supportive devices such as crutches, canes, and prostheses. Instructs family/caregivers in use and care of appliances and in phases of physical therapy with which they may work with the patient. Evaluates the home for safety concerns. F. Administers treatments involving application of physical agents. G. Evaluates effects of treatment at various stages and adjusts treatments to achieve maximum benefit. Reports to provider the patient’s reaction to treatment or changes in condition or pain level. May maintain or optimize declining function with home care and hospice patients. H. Administers massage; administers traction to relieve pain. I. Records treatment, response, and progress in patient’s chart or enters information into computer. J. Instructs patient and family in treatment procedures to be continued at home or started in the home setting. K. Evaluates and adjusts prosthetic and orthotic devices and recommends modifications to Orthotist. L. Confers with physician and other practitioners to obtain additional patient information, suggest revisions in treatment program, and integrate physical therapy treatment with other aspects of patient’s health care. M. Orients, instructs, provides education to and directs work activities of assistants, nursing personnel and students. N. Plans and conducts lectures and training programs on physical therapy and related topics for medical staff, students, and community groups. O. Actively participates in committee meetings and activities including PI and interdisciplinary group meetings. P. Attends inservices, conferences and other educational sessions to advance knowledge and skills. Q. When able, may plan and develop physical therapy research programs and participates in conducting research. R. Conforms to hospital and department policies and the corporate standards for service excellence.

SAFETY A.

Demonstrates safe work habits and timely reporting of incidents and/or unsafe conditions. Follows established guidelines during fire, disaster, and emergency drills and actual occurrences. B. Completes educational requirements on an annual basis. C. Complies with policies and procedures relating to patient safety and National Safety Goals. D. Completes occurrence reports according to policy and procedure. E. Upon recognition of a patient or other safety concern, takes appropriate steps to resolve the concern. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 1.Must possess Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university, Master’s or Doctorate degree preferred. 2. One to two years’ experience required. 3. Must have valid Physical Therapy licensure in the state of Michigan. May practice with temporary license, but must obtain permanent license within one year. 4. Must have valid driver’s license if needed to provide home care and hospice visits. 5. Ability to read directions and navigate to patient homes. Supervisory Responsibilities Physical Therapist Assistants, Rehab Aides, and Volunteers Language Skills 1. Must be able to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, comprehend financial reports, and legal documents. 2. Must be able to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. 3. Must be able to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. 4. Must be able to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or board of directors. 5. Must be able to communicate effectively and clearly with co-workers, patients, families and caregivers. Mathematical Skills 1. Must be able to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry. 2. Must be able to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Reasoning Ability 1. Must be able to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. 2. Must be able to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
