The Institute houses theCenter for Spinal Cord Injury Recovery and the SoutheasternMichigan Traumatic Brain Injury System (SEMTBIS), one of only 16federally designated model systems of care for brain injury careand research. RIM also operates 31 outpatient sites throughoutsoutheast Michigan specializing in sports medicine andorthopedics.

Job Description:

Under general supervision of a PhysicalTherapist, provides direct patient care using standard physicaltherapy procedures. Instructs patients and family, oversees students, andvolunteers, and participates in program development and educationactivities. Assists Physical Therapist in patient evaluation, and assessesfunctional skills of patients. Provides individual patient treatment including therapeuticexercise, gait training, mat mobility, transfers. Performs prosthetic training, administers modality treatments,and measures and recommends equipment such as wheelchairs,orthoses, assistive devises and wheelchair cushions. Instructs patients and family members, transfers, gaittraining, and home exercise programs. Participates in chart rounds,admission and discharge conferences, family conferences and teamdevelopment conferences. Maintains records such as initial, interim and dischargedocumentation, home care program, and equipment orders andprescriptions. Prepares special reports, as requested. Receives formalsupervision from a Physical Therapist to ensure all patientdocumentation is reviews and co-signed. Attends and contributes to organizational and programdevelopment team and departmental meetings. Supervises, instructs and evaluates students, andvolunteers. Maintains current knowledge of physical therapy theory andtechniques through reading, attendance at meetings and seminars,and involvement in professional organizations.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications1. Associate’s degree inPhysical Therapy with coursework in anatomy, biology, physiologyand psychology to gain knowledge of physical therapy treatments andtechniques.2. One year of experience in a clinical settingpreferred.3. Current license to practice as a PTA in the state ofMichigan.

Skills Required1. Oral and written communication skillsadequate for therapeutic and professional interaction.2. Basicknowledge and skill in common Physical Therapy practices andprocedures.3. Visual acuity to observe patient response totreatment (i.e.) sweat, express, dilation of pupils); ability todetermine fine discriminate detail to read equipment gauges andon-line computer; manual dexterity to operate equipment.4. Sensoryability to distinguish hot and cold during patient treatments.
