POSITION SUMMARY

The Bone and Joint Rehabilitation Services (BJRS) PhysicalTherapist Assistant (PTA) is responsible for conducting PhysicalTherapy interventions to reduce pain, restore function, promotemobility, and prevent disability following disease, injury, oraccident. The

works in a collaborative model with thephysical therapist (PT) to provide high quality healthcare throughinstruction and motivation, patient education, and progression ofpatient rehabilitation towards their established short/long termpatient centered goals that fall within the scope of PTA practice.

In addition, PTA’s roles are to promote fitness and wellnessoriented programs to promote health following discharge fromskilled therapy. PTA’s are expected to conduct all interventionsand communication with compassion, patient centric mindset,knowledge of current/emerging evidence based techniques andtechnologies, all the while being cognizant of cost-effectivenessand ethical / legal guidelines.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Formal Education /

Training:

Graduate of an accredited PTA Program. Current / active license in the state of Tennessee. Prior experience in outpatient and / or sports medicine

PT Workplace Experience:

Patient Care Delivery Demonstrate ability to deliver positive and professionalcommunication within the workplace

Equipment and Skills Training:

Able to work within the companies EMR system with accuracy andefficiency. Able to work standard PC/fax, adjust necessary exercise equipmentfor patient care activity. Able to provide clear, skilled documentation for accurate, timelyand detailed charting and billing processes. Able to work well under pressure and function independently and aspart of the Bone and Joint Institute of Tennessee (BJIT) team ofphysicians, physician assistants, medical assistants, nursepractitioners, technicians, athletic trainers and physical /occupational therapists. Able to apply PTA knowledge safely and effectively to daily patientcare. Able to safely apply physical agents required and recommended byPOC.

Physical Environment:

Out-patient rehabilitation care in multidisciplinary teamrehabilitation setting May be exposed to risk of blood-borne pathogens/diseases.

Physical Effort:

Able to communicate clearly in English written and verbally. Prolonged standing, walking for length of work shift. Frequently lifts, positions, transfers, and pushes patients. Frequently moves supplies and equipment requiring moderate physicaleffort (lift/carry/push/pull up to 50 lbs.). Manual dexterity and mobility. Frequent reaching, bending, kneeling, and crouching. Occasionally removes or replaces supplies or equipment weighing upto 25 lbs. from locations at or above shoulder level. Lift and / or carry patients with necessary assistance / assistivedevices in case of emergency evacuation.

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS

Implements treatment plans established by supervising PhysicalTherapist based on standards of practice using an interdisciplinaryapproach with patients, families, and staff. Demonstrates knowledge and ability to apply therapeuticprinciples and practices consistent with standards established bythe American Physical Therapy Association. Progresses patients through levels of treatment effectively andsafely under supervision and guidance of Physical Therapist. Consults with supervising physical therapist and other staffmembers to coordinate physical therapy with other therapeuticactivities. Provides input to the Physical Therapist regarding patient’sprogress on an ongoing basis, but at least weekly. Demonstrates the ability to communicate with patients andfamilies in establishing favorable attitudes and motivation towardthe rehabilitation process. Participates in the orientation and skill development of newteam members and students. Performs timely, thorough, and complete documentation ofpatients’ care. Maintains work areas and personal appearance in a way thatreflects professionalism and demonstrates cleanliness, orderliness,and safety. Participates in activities that improve departmenteffectiveness, processes, communication, and/or image in theorganization. Manages time and caseloads effectively
