POSITION SUMMARY
Provides casting services to the patients of Bone and JointInstitute of Tennessee.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Formal Education /
Training:
High School diploma or equivalent, required. High School diploma orequivalent, graduation from a Medical Assistant program andcoursework in applying casts and other orthopedic devices.
Workplace Experience:
One year experience as a Nursing Assistant, Medical Assistant,Orthopedic Surgical Technician or other related profession. Priorexperience as a Casting Technician is preferred.
Equipment and Skills Training:
This position requires a fundamental knowledge of technical workwith orthopedic devices, bracing and casting related activities.
Clinical work is performed under the general supervision of alicensed patient care professional. Competent in the use ofstandard medical office equipment and medical supplies includingcomputers with appropriate medical software, facsimile machines,copying machines and telephones.
Physical Environment:
Family medical practice office.
Physical Effort:
Stooping, turning, bending, squatting, kneeling and the ability tolift up to 50 pounds; constant/repetitive standing; requiresnormal, correctable vision and hearing, and the ability toaccurately discern color as necessary to perform job functions.
Ability to read, write and effectively communicate in English.
PERFORMANCE STANDARDS
Applies casts using a variety of materials including plasterand synthetic casting materials and high and low temperatureplastics. Applies and adjusts orthopedic devices such as braces, splints,and compression stockings. Arranges, assembles and adjusts traction equipment. Removes sutures and staples. Assists in Operating Room and Ambulatory Surgery. Cleans exam and procedure tables, work areas and toolsaccording to schedules. Cleans general equipment (wheelchairs, IVpoles, etc.) according to guidelines. Stocks exam and procedure rooms according to schedules and asneeded. Inventories specialty items. Initiates reorder of suppliesas needed. Performs appropriate documentation and patient educationrelated to cast or splinting and as directed by physician, NursePractitioner, Physician Assistant resident or RegisteredNurse. Arranges for take home supplies for patients. Observes universal precautions. Communicates effectively with patients/families and the clinicteam in a manner that promotes positive working relationships. Maintains work area and personal appearance in a way thatreflects professionalism and demonstrates to our patients, visitorsand coworkers the importance we place on cleanliness, orderlinessand safety. Completes additional duties and special tasks in a timelyfashion.
