PhysicianAssistant and Nurse Practitioner APRN Role The Hartford HealthCareHeart & Vascular Institute is seeking a dynamic and dedicatedPhysician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner APRN to join the busy andgrowing Department of Cardiac Surgery. Under the direction of acardiothoracic surgeon, the Physician Assistant or NursePractitioner APRN is responsible for performing a variety ofduties. These duties include but are not limited to: firstassisting cardiovascular surgical procedures, endoscopic vesselharvesting, preoperative history and physical examination,postoperative care in an outpatient clinical setting and patienteducation. The successful candidate will also support patient carefrom the point of admission to discharge in service, Step-Down, andICU. Duties include managing multiple patients with varied criticalillness, comprehensive physical assessments, interpretation ofdiagnostic results, hemodynamic/ventilator management, and invasiveprocedures. Extensive training and supervision are provided to thePhysician Assistants or Nurse Practitioners for skills such asarterial lines, central lines, chest tubes, feeding tubes, andremoval of pacer wires.
Physician Assistants and Nurse PractitionerAPRN Role Scope:
In consultation with the physician(s) and careteam members, Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners developplans for further evaluation of health needs, e.g., referral toother health team members or specialists. Physician Assistants andNurse Practitioners provide appropriate treatment for problemswithin the scope of the provider’s practice as designated byprotocols and identifies problems outside of their scope ofpractice and refers appropriately to physician. The PhysicianAssistants and Nurse Practitioners are part of a multidisciplinaryteam that plans and delivers care of patients under the directionof the attending cardiac surgeons in collaboration with thecardiologists and consultants.

- Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant or Nurse PractitionerAPRN Master’s program
- Licensed, or eligible to be licensed, as aPhysician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner APRN in the state ofConnecticut
- Certification or eligible to be certified as aPhysician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner APRN.
- 2 years’experience in cardiovascular surgery and/or 2 years’ experience asa PA/APRN in critical care setting
