Clinical resource for perioperative services staff members using evidence-based knowledge and prevailing standards. Interfaces with surgeon and anesthesia, patients and families as needed for quality of care, center efficiencies, and surgeon/patient/family satisfaction. Observes and oversees clinical care in the operating and procedure rooms to ensure that nursing care and scrub technician duties are carried out as directed and treatment is administered in accordance with physicians’ instructions and EDGE (Every Day Giving Excellence) proven practices. Evaluates current practice through quality and performance improvement measures. Demonstrates effective communication and collaboration skills with members of the perioperative team, physicians, sales representatives, and other staff members. Serves as a member of a multidisciplinary team in planning perioperative patient care. Works collaboratively with the administrator, Preop/PACU Manager, Business Office Manager, Materials Manager, and Quality Improvement Coordinator. Works collaboratively with the surgery center scheduler to ensure cases are scheduled efficiently and accurately. Ensures that the appropriate personnel, equipment, and supplies are available for all cases. Contacts reps as needed to ensure trays and equipment will be ready and available for cases. Coordinates, facilitates, and manages changes within the surgery center. Champions and implements EDGE initiatives as they relate to the operating and procedure rooms. Manages the operating room environment in a fiscally responsible manner. Oversees medical capital equipment needs in the operating and procedure rooms, and makes recommendations for new equipment when needed. Troubleshoots equipment breakdowns. Follows equipment safety guidelines. Assists with environmental hazard and infection control surveillance, and participates in emergency preparedness drills. Ensures that Standard Universal Precautions, the National Patient Safety Goals and principles of aseptic and sterile technique are used appropriately. Ensures that focus studies are conducted and good catches are documented as outlined in the EDGE program. Ensures that monthly focus study data is entered into MIDAS by the deadline. Collects and analyzes data that applies to perioperative services to facilitate collaboration and negotiation with stakeholders. Staffs operating and procedure room on a daily basis in an efficient and safe manner. Directs the hiring, selection, performance reviews, annual competencies, and training of clinical personnel in the O.R. Evaluates performance of staff members in the operating room on a periodic basis and formally, on an annual basis. Provides both verbal and written performance evaluations. Initiates counseling and disciplinary actions of staff members when appropriate. Provides written interactions of such actions for the employee’s file. Pursues professional growth and participates in a professional organization, preferably AORN.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Physical Demands:

Shall be physically able to stand, walk, and maintain varied body motions and positions for long periods of time. Demonstrates manual dexterity. The employee is required to stand, walk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Shall be able to hear and speak. Shall be able to move up to 100 pounds. Experience/Education Graduate of an approved school of nursing. Currently licensed in the state of Georgia. CPR required, advanced life support certification preferred. Minimum two years management experience required in the intra-operative setting. Orthopaedic experience. Demonstrates clinical competency, leadership, and teaching capabilities. Physically and emotionally capable of performing responsibilities of position.

Other skills and abilities:

Familiarity with medical and orthopaedic terminology as it pertains to anatomy and surgical procedures for an operating room. Strong people management skills.
