EM Academic Core Faculty Job Description TheHighland Emergency Medicine Residency Program has trained emergencyphysicians for over 40 years. It has been ACGME (AccreditationCouncil for Graduate Medical Education) accredited since 1984, andnow trains 11-12 residents per class in PGY 1-4. Based in one ofthe West Coast’s oldest public hospitals, the EM residency programis a national leader in Emergency Ultrasound, ED (EmergencyDepartment) HIV testing and treatment, non-narcotic analgesia,ED-initiated buprenorphine treatment, care of victims of sexualassault, as well as the birthplace of social emergency medicine.
The program is nationally known for training emergency physicianswho are clinically outstanding and can lead and thrive in anyenvironment. Core faculty are based in the ED at Highland Hospitalin Oakland, and are national leaders in their areas of expertise,highly clinically skilled, and outstanding bedside teachers. TheHighland faculty is much smaller than most programs of comparablesize. Therefore, the faculty group expects an elevated level ofcommitment to the residency program from its core members. Thisposition both supports the delivery of high-quality patient care toour community in the East Bay and the training of future leaders inEmergency Medicine (EM) who will carry out the mission of thedepartment and hospital. Core faculty may also be selected fortheir specific expertise and unique contribution to the program.
Core faculty are engaged in targeted residency activities, plusadditional contributions based on their expertise in EM. Acomponent of FTE is allocated for academic work and teaching for EMcore faculty. Academic Core Faculty Clinical Requirements Provideappropriate medical services to all patients presenting to theEmergency Department Provide services for the contracted number ofshifts for EM core faculty at Highland, set forth by the AHMGCompensation Committee. This shall include backup duties asdetermined by the Chair and consistent with the departmentalscheduling policy. Supervise and teach residents, interns, medicalstudents, and other learners in the delivery of patient care andpractice of Emergency Medicine. Foster a supportive and safeclinical learning environment for residents, students, andlearners. Work and collaborate with consultants and subspecialistsin a collegial fashion in service of patients. Model exceptionalclinical practice and communication skills for learners in ourtraining programs. Deliver care based on best practices andevidence-based medicine, adhere to applicable standards of care,medical ethics, and policies and protocols. Complete documentationin the Electronic Health Record in a timely fashion, commensuratewith any policies set forth by AHS Health Information Management orits proxy Provide online-based hospital medical control andconsultation for Alameda County EMS providers. Be responsible, on acase-by-case basis as the need arises, for taking all actionsnecessary to facilitate the appropriate transfer of a patient to orfrom another medical facility to gain access to the appropriateservices and medical care needed. Consult with EM QRC leadership toachieve better clinical outcomes for patients, improve the qualityof patient care and maximize the efficient utilization of physicianand hospital resources. Report to departmental leadership andhospital administration, as needed, material concerns about qualityof care, delay in delivery of medical services to patients, or anypatient concerns. Comply with the requirements and standards of AHS(Alameda Health System) Medical Staff bylaws, The Joint Commission(TJC) and any other accrediting agencies designated as well as allapplicable AHS policies, code of conduct, rules, and regulations.
Support departmental operations and nursing leadership inimplementing new procedures, controls, and systems to promote andfacilitate quality, cost controls, reimbursement functions,standardization of products and equipment, and any other requestsmade by hospital. Provide effective and timely communications toreferring or admitting physicians, patients and family concerningthe clinical status of each patient admitted through the EmergencyDepartment. Perform other select duties as assigned by thedepartment Chair or Vice Chair. Residency Core Faculty RequirementsConference/Didactics (ACGME Requirement) Active participation inEmergency Medicine Residency teaching conferences, includingWednesday Weekly Didactics and Monthly Journal Club/Follow-UpAttendance is expected unless post-nights/swings, on-duty, engagedin other clinical, teaching, or administrative duties, or onPTO/vacation/leave. Develop and deliver a minimum of three corelectures per year Lead a minimum of three Journal Club or Follow-Upsessions per year. Participate and contribute to monthly smallgroup sessions, follow-up conferences, procedural teachingsessions, simulation sessions, and Resident ProfessionalDevelopment Participate at a prominent level in residencyinterviewing and recruitment. Participate in residency ranking andselection process. Attend and contribute to residency orientationsessions. Serve as a mock oral board examiner. Support/mentorresidency involvement in Patient Safety, including instructionaround RCAs and True North Metrics Provide career guidance andmentorship for residents. Scholarly Work (ACGME Requirement)Participate in at least one academic project while serving as corefaculty. This may include research projects, case reports, subjectreviews, book chapters, FOAM med, and active publications.
Contribute at least one scholarly work/project each year towardsthe
ACGME EM RRC
requirement for academic productivity. Representthe residency program locally and nationally at professionalconferences, through committee work, policy work,multi-institutional collaborations, and other speaking/teachingengagements. Evaluation and Assessment (ACGME requirement) Providetimely and specific feedback to residents at the conclusion of eachclinical shift. Complete written evaluations in the ResidencyManagement System (New Innovations) Contribute to the continualimprovement of evaluation methods and tools. Complete the ACGMEAnnual Faculty Survey. Professional Development (ACGME Requirement)Participate in professional development on an annual basis thatimproves their performance as educators, in quality improvement, infostering their own and residents’ well-being, and inpatient carebased on their practice-based learning and improvement efforts.
Academic Departmental Administration Serve as a member of at leastone departmental or system-wide committee Support the departmentaland residency commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in therecruitment and training of physician workforce who reflect ourcommunity. Participate as a voting member of the Graduate MedicalEducation Committee. Complete all educational and competencymodules set forth by AHS or AHMG for compliance and educationalpurposes Attend bi-monthly staff meetings unless workingclinically/post-shift/on PTO/on leave. Participate in 70% of allresidency interview sessions unless otherwise on PTO or leave. Mustbe flexible and assist the department with teaching /administrative / and clinical needs as they arise – agreed uponjointly with the EM Chair. Create annual goals. Meet with EM Chairand or Vice Chair annually to review yearly goals and expectations.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) orDoctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) is required.
Required :
BoardEligible or Board Certified in Emergency Medicine.
RequiredLicenses/Certifications :
Possession of a valid license to practicemedicine in the State of California. Valid DEA (Drug EnforcementAdministration) license Compliance with Emergency Medicine (EM)Board-mandated education and training to maintain State licensureand board certification.
Pay Range:
$169.66-$179.86 / Hour The payrange for this position reflects the base pay scale for the role atAlameda Health System. Final compensation will be determined basedon several factors, including but not limited to a candidate’sexperience, education, skills, licensure, and certifications,departmental equity, applicable collective bargaining agreements,and the operational needs of the organization.
