General Job Responsibilities:
Diagnose and treat a wide range of digestive system disordersin adults and potentially children (depending on theposition). Conduct comprehensive patient histories and physicalexaminations. Order and interpret diagnostic tests such as endoscopies,X-rays, CT scans and blood tests. Perform endoscopic procedures to diagnose and treat digestiveconditions (depending on the scope of practice). Develop and implement treatment plans. Manage chronic digestive conditions and provide ongoing patientcare. Collaborate with surgeons, radiologists and other specialistswhen needed to ensure coordinated care. Educate patients on digestive health and diseaseprevention. Maintain accurate and complete medical records for allpatients. Stay current on the latest advancements in gastroenterologythrough continuing education.
Skills:
In-depth knowledge of gastroenterology principles andpractices, including diagnosis, treatment and prevention ofdigestive diseases. Strong clinical judgment and decision-making skills in afast-paced environment. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to buildrapport with patients and collaborate effectively with healthcareteams. Technical proficiency in performing endoscopic procedures (ifapplicable). Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination for endoscopicprocedures. Meticulous attention to detail and the ability to adapt tochanging patient conditions. Time management and organizational skills to manage a patientworkload effectively.
Minimum Education Requirements:
Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree or Doctor of OsteopathicMedicine (DO) degree from an accredited medical school. Residency training program in internal medicine accredited bythe Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) orAmerican Osteopathic Association (AOA). Fellowship training in gastroenterology (may be preferreddepending on the position).
License & Certifications:
Board certification in gastroenterology by the American Boardof Internal Medicine (ABIM) or the AOA. Active and unrestricted medical license in Illinois.
Experience:
While specific requirements may vary, most locumgastroenterologist positions prefer candidates with at least oneyear of experience providing gastroenterology care in a clinical orhospital setting.
