NIRC Administration Responsibilities:
The Academic Scientific Technologist will play a critical role in supporting infectious and noninfectious disease research at the New Iberia Research Center (NIRC), a $75 million AAALAC International-accredited biomedical research facility. Reporting to the Chief Scientific Officer and Principal Investigator (P.I.), this NIH grant-funded position will contribute to studies involving nonhuman primates (NHPs) housed at NIRC, which serves as a vital resource for biomedical research aimed at addressing human health challenges. The technologist will work in ABSL2, ABSL3, BSL2, and BSL3 laboratory settings, ensuring strict adherence to study protocols while performing a variety of laboratory and animal-related procedures. Key Responsibilities
Conduct and support infectious and noninfectious disease studies involving nonhuman primates.
Perform laboratory assays, including nucleic acid extraction, molecular assays, flow cytometry, and cell sorting.
Culture and analyze pathogens (viral, bacterial, parasitic) and conduct microscopy and imaging analysis (fluorescence, white light, CT, PET, X-ray, ultrasound).
Assist in sample collection from NHPs and support surgical procedures, including anesthesia monitoring and minor procedures.
Administer study drugs, vaccinations, and infectious agents to NHPs.
Process tissues and prepare peripheral blood mononuclear cells.
Assist with necropsies, including tissue collection and analysis.
Maintain laboratory equipment, order supplies, and prepare study drugs and reagents.
Enter and manage data in animal records, study records, and laboratory databases.
Conduct statistical data analysis and generate graphs and visuals for publications.
Organize and oversee the storage and shipment of biological samples and reagents.
Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Required Qualifications:
Master of Science degree
OR a Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of experience in biology, immunology, molecular biology, microbiology, or a related field (or equivalent) will substitute for the Master’s degree
Preferred Qualifications:
Previous experience in biomedical research with nonhuman primate (NHP) model sample collection and/or BSL2 bench work experience, and the operation of equipment under BL2 conditions
Skills, Abilities, Etc.:
Excellent communication skills and attention to detail
