The Chair of the Department of Otolaryngology is a critical leader within SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University. The Chair will provide executive leadership, direction and administration of the Department of Otolaryngology in its College of Medicine (COM). The individual who assumes this position will be responsible for ensuring a tradition of excellence into the future.
The Chair will recruit, direct, and develop a faculty who, as a group, can provide the full range of otolaryngology services, including Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (FPRS), Head, Neck and Skull-base Surgery, Otology and Neurotology, Pediatric Otolaryngology, Laryngology and Neurolaryngology, Rhinology and Skull-base Surgery, General Otolaryngology, and Communicative Disorders and Audiology. These services are performed at University Hospital at Downstate (UHD) and our affiliated hospital centers, including Kings County Hospital Center (KCHC), Maimonides Medical Center, New York Presbyterian — Brooklyn Methodist Hospital (NYP-BMH), Manhattan Eye, Ear, and Throat Hospital (MEETH), and Lenox Hill Hospital, all of which serve as the department’s primary clinical service and training hospitals. The Department Chair is also responsible for managing our affiliated hospital centers and partner with other faculty to build a thriving practice that draws patients and referrals from throughout Brooklyn and beyond.
We foresee that this service will have extensive educational and clinical affiliations with other teaching hospitals in our area and will provide services of a quality that will make it the first choice for otolaryngology care in our region. The Chair will also lead his/her faculty (both current and those recruited) in the development of innovative clinical and basic research initiatives, either independently or in collaboration with other investigators on our faculty. With this foundation, we expect significant growth in specialty care at UHD, its associated satellite facilities, KCHC, SUNY Bay Ridge, NYP-BMH, MEETH, and Lenox Hill Hospital. We also expect that the faculty the Chair will recruit will significantly expand the range of services available to its patients while providing a superb educational experience for our residents and students.
The Chair will maintain and enhance Downstate’s residency and fellowship programs in otolaryngology and our elective offering for medical students. Our graduates have long been recognized as being well prepared to make significant contributions in their discipline, but we believe that we can further enhance the quality and reputation of these programs and will rely on the Chair and the faculty to devote considerable attention to this task. Together with Downstate’s academic partners, these programs will prepare the next generation of leaders and practitioners in this field for careers in Brooklyn, New York City, and the nation, and carve a place for Downstate as a leading center for state-of-the-art otolaryngology services.
The Chair will build a broad array of strong research programs in both basic and translational research and developing innovative research initiatives, either independently or in collaboration with other investigators on our faculty. A reputation for path-breaking research will, in turn, enhance our ability to attract patients, referrals, and residents, creating the foundation for a new phase of departmental growth.
The Department of Otolaryngology comprises 12 primary faculty and 7 part-time faculty. The department’s ACGME accredited otolaryngology residency supports 15 trainees.
