Position Summary:

The Medical Sonics Supervisor is responsible for the leadership, coordination, and quality oversight of all activities within the Medical Sonics (Ultrasound) department. This role ensures the delivery of high-quality diagnostic imaging services, maintains efficient patient flow, and fosters a collaborative environment among technologists, physicians, and support staff. The supervisor also participates in performing ultrasound procedures as needed and contributes to operational planning and budget support.

Key Responsibilities:

Operational Oversight & Clinical Quality
Supervise day-to-day operations of the Medical Sonics area, ensuring adherence to clinical standards, safety protocols, and best practices.
Monitor work performance of sonographers, providing coaching and support to ensure high-quality care and efficient service delivery.
Evaluate and improve workflow to maintain smooth patient throughput and minimal delays.
Maintain a clean, organized, and functional work environment across all assigned ultrasound areas.
Staff Management & Scheduling
Develop and manage staff schedules to ensure adequate coverage and compliance with labor and operational guidelines.
Participate in interviewing, hiring, onboarding, and mentoring new sonographers.
Conduct performance evaluations and assist in staff development and training efforts.
Equipment & Supplies
Troubleshoot ultrasound equipment issues and coordinate service or repairs as needed.
Demonstrate and train staff on new equipment and procedures.
Monitor supply levels and place orders to ensure readiness while managing costs.
Request capital equipment or specialized items through the department manager/director.
Collaboration & Communication
Serve as the primary contact for communication between the ultrasound department and referring physicians, radiologists, and other clinical staff.
Ensure excellent patient service and address concerns or feedback promptly and professionally.
Maintain and update procedure manuals and ensure compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards.
Budget & Administrative Support
Assist in preparing and managing departmental budgets.
Identify and evaluate opportunities for cost containment and operational efficiency.
Clinical Duties
Perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients of all ages when needed, following department protocols and safety guidelines.

Qualifications:

Graduate of an accredited Radiologic Technology or Diagnostic Medical Sonography program.
RDMS (Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer) certification required.
ARRT certification and/or additional credentials in sonography (preferred if applicable).
Minimum of 3-5 years of hands-on experience in Medical Sonography.
Proven ability to supervise, mentor, and evaluate clinical staff.
Strong knowledge of ultrasound imaging protocols, equipment, and quality assurance practices.
Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to maintain professionalism and compassion in a fast-paced clinical environment.
