The Opportunity Evaluate patients of any age, in any setting, to obtain apreliminary pre-anesthetic health history, perform an appropriatepre-anesthetic physical examination, and record pertinent data inan organized and legible manner for review by ananesthesiologist. Obtain and interpret diagnostic laboratory and related studiesas appropriate, such as drawing arterial and venous bloodsamples. Establish noninvasive and invasive routine monitoringmodalities as delegated by the responsible anesthesiologist. Assist in the application and interpretation of advancedmonitoring techniques such as pulmonary artery catheterization,electroencephalographic spectral analysis, echocardiography andevoked potentials. Assist in inducing, maintaining, and altering depths ofsedation/anesthesia; administer supportive treatment; and providecontinuity of anesthetic care into and during the postoperativerecovery period. Assist in the use of advanced life support techniques includingairway management and appropriate ventilatory support. Assist in making post-anesthesia patient rounds by recordingpatient progress notes, compiling and recording case summaries, andtranscribing standing and specific orders. Evaluate life-threatening situations and administer appropriatetreatment, such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation, based onestablished protocols (i.e., basic life support, advance cardiaclife support, and pediatric advanced life support). Perform and monitor regional anesthesia including, but notlimited to, spinal, epidural, IV regional, and other specialtechniques such as local infiltration and nerve blocks. Assist in the performance of duties in intensive care units,pain clinics and other settings, as appropriate. Train and supervise personnel in the calibration, troubleshooting, and use of patient monitors. Assist in the clinical instruction of others. Remain in constant contact with patients, family members, theprovider care team, and facility staff members. May present cases to medical staff consultants. May serve on hospital committees. Required Experience andCompetencies Bachelor’s degree required. Satisfactory completion of an anesthesiologist assistantprogram that is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation ofAllied Health Education Programs (or by a predecessor or successorentity) required. Certification from the National Commission for Certification ofAnesthesiologist Assistants required. Current state licensure as an anesthesiologist assistantrequired. Flexibility to respond to the varying demands of patientcare. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Effective listening skills. Ability to make critical decisions in a timely manner with aminimal amount of supervision. Patience and emotional stability to respond to patients andstaff members in a compassionate and professional manner. Stamina to focus on patient care and accurate documentation ofthe visit for long periods of time, working rapidly for theduration of an 8-, 10- or 12-hour shift. Ability to read reports and to use a paper charting system andelectronic medical records system. Tolerance for high levels of emotional stress in an environmentof crisis response. Stamina for an irregular schedule of day, evening and nightshifts as well as weekends and holidays. Ability to respond to medical and administrative staff in atimely manner.
