The minimum salary for this position will be $230,000.00. This position will also be eligible for a $40,000 special assignment pay.
With our Agency’s mission to support the recovery of people with mental illnesses, we provide a complete array of medical and support services for children, adults, and families throughout South Carolina. This position is located at the Department of Mental Health Forensic Services, Crafts-Farrow, 7901 Farrow Rd, Columbia, SC 29203.
As a Psychiatrist, working under limited supervision, conduct forensic psychiatric evaluations and generate written reports on inpatients and outpatients who are involved in the adjudication process or committed to the DMH forensic hospital. Perform court related duties, including testifying as an expert witness. Provide consultation and/or direct psychiatric treatment of individuals in local jails in need of competency restoration services or in support of a diversion treatment plan.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Conduct forensic psychiatric evaluations weekly and generate written reports for inpatient and outpatient forensic services. Evaluations may involve competency to stand trial, criminal responsibility, capacity to conform, diagnosis, consultation. forensic discharge/risk assessment. or other forensic issues.
Provide competency restoration treatment for assigned cases in jails or community settings and psychiatric consultation to other providers as assigned.
Provide psychiatric treatment services to assigned priority cases to support forensic diversion plans and safe return to the community from jail.
Perform Designated Examinations as needed for inpatient and outpatient services.
Perform court-related duties as required, including testifying as an expert witness.
Comply with DMH and Forensic Evaluation Service policies and procedures.
Minimum and Additional Requirements
Licensed to practice medicine in South Carolina. Completion of a four-year (4) residency in psychiatry. Completion of Forensic Fellowship or other Forensic experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Bilingual abilities in English and Spanish (or another language) are a plus.
Additional Comments
Must be licensed to practice medicine in South Carolina. In state travel will be required. Court appearances may exceed regular work hours. Work within a jail/prison, secure building, and in an impatient facility required. Must be able to climb a flight of stairs and lift up to 30pounds.
