Role:
As a Psychiatrist at the Lt. Col. Luke Weathers, Jr. VA Medical Center, you will devote approximately 95% of your time to direct patient care, delivering comprehensive psychiatric services across inpatient, outpatient, and residential settings.
Your daily responsibilities may include:
Inpatient Psychiatry:
Conduct psychiatric evaluations, manage admissions and discharges, develop and implement treatment plans, collaborate with VA clinical teams, and ensure timely and complete documentation.
Outpatient and Residential Care:
Operate VA psychiatric clinics, see new and follow-up patients (including those with severe mental illness), and provide post-discharge follow-up care. Maintain a schedule of approximately 6 to 6.5 bookable patient hours per day.
Peer Review & Quality Oversight:
Participate in professional peer reviews, mental health case evaluations, and contribute to patient safety reviews and benefit appeals as needed.
Emergency Coverage Scheduling:
Assist in preparing monthly call schedules for mental health emergencies in coordination with the Chief of Mental Health.
Clinical Communication & Compliance:
Ensure timely communication of test results, adherence to VA medication policies, and provide discharge education coordinated with follow-up care. Administrative Duties (approx. 5%): Attend required staff meetings and maintain effective communication with VA leadership to support compliance and service coordination.
Work Schedule:
In Clinic hours are typically Monday – Friday, 8am – 5pm. Off-hours coverage is required during evenings, weekends, holidays with schedule determined a month in advance.
Minimum Qualifications:
Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in any U.S. state or territory. No history of license suspension, restriction, or revocation. Board Certified or Board Eligible in Psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications. Must provide proof of up-to-date health screenings and vaccinations (TB, MMR, Varicella, Tdap, Influenza, Hep B). Must hold a current DEA certificate for prescribing controlled substances.
