Job Description

SummaryNephrology is a branch of medical science concerned with the study of the kidneys, especially their functions and diseases.

This position is within the Specialty Service and reports directly to the section Chief of Nephrology.

QualificationsTo qualify for this position, applicants must meet the basic and any additional requirements listed in the job announcement.

Pending training or license requirements may be temporarily accepted, but all must be completed prior to hiring.

Current VA employees who initially met the qualifications are deemed qualified.

Basic RequirementsUnited States Citizenship; non-citizens may be appointed if qualified citizens are unavailable, per VA Policy.

Doctor of medicine or osteopathic medicine degree from an approved school.

Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in the US or its territories.

Completed residency training approved by the VA, leading to eligibility for board certification, in an accredited program.

Residents in approved programs may be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs) on a limited basis.

Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Physical requirements as per VA Directive and Handbook 5019.DutiesPrivileges include admission, diagnosis, consultation, medication ordering, and non-surgical treatment of general medicine problems.

Core privileges include procedures such as abdominal paracentesis, joint injections, lumbar puncture, thoracentesis, blood draws, and peripheral venous line placement.
