Job Description Summary:
The Therapist is responsible for the accurate application of ionizing radiation to the patient in accordance with the prescription and instructions of the Radiation Oncologist. Radiation Therapist will report directly to the Lead Therapist. The therapist is accountable for an assigned shift as scheduled.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Verifies and accurately delivers the prescribed planned course of radiation therapy according to the radiation oncologist, including verifying correct patient, dose, field size, and, monitor units, as well as verifying patient positioning and isocenter with KV matching and/or Cone Beam CT matching and taking port films as indicated by the physician.
Accurately delivers the prescribed dose of radiation to blood products as needed by the hospital blood bank.
Knows warm-up procedures and performs them daily to assure that the equipment is in the proper working order, reporting any variance to service engineer or physicist.
Prepares treatment room daily to ensure the first patient is started on time.
The late therapist is responsible for leaving room in an orderly manner.
Performs all types of CT simulations and block cutting.
Produces and utilizes immobilization devices, such as vac-lock bags, aquaplast masks, and other treatment setup accessories.
Observes patients for unusual reactions and events and reports them to the appropriate personnel, i.e.
Radiation Oncologist, Oncology Nurse, and Radiation Physicist.
Communicates with Social Services when a patient need arises.
Performs related responsibilities as required or directed.
Qualifications:
EDUCATION
Skill and proficiency in the field of Radiation Therapy and Radiography. Such proficiency is normally acquired through the completion of a 12 month accredited AMA approved Radiation Therapy program post-ARRT license or a BS degree in radiation science. At least an AAS degree in Radiological Sciences is required.
LICENSURE, REGISTRATION, CERTIFICATION
Must be registered as a Radiation Therapy Technologist by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT). The license must be kept current at all times while in this position.
BLS certification must be obtained within the orientation period, and certification must be kept current at all times while in this position.
EXPERIENCE
Knowledge of hospital and departmental policies and procedures, equipment, forms, and record keeping as normally acquired through 3 months of orientation.
