Summary:
Under the general supervision of the Lead MammographyTechnologist the Mammography Manager and following ACR standards ofpractice for mammography the Mammography Technologist performs a varietyof examinations utilizing low dose radiation to produce high resolutionhigh contrast images and assists the radiologist in performing invasiveprocedures of the breast. The technologist also maintains an orderlyclean work area and performs routine clerical tasks. All essentialfunctions performed in the position reflect age specific needs of thegeriatric adult and pediatric patients. These functions foster patientand family centered care and nursing services in accordance with theBrown University Health and Rhode Island Hospital mission vision andvalues including all developmental stages as well as cultural patterns.
Responsibilities:
Instructs patient regarding procedure and properpositioning to produce high quality mammography images. Answer questionsregarding the exam within the Technologist scope of practice. Reviewsand/or records pertinent patient history and supporting clinical data tofacilitate optimum diagnostic results. Understands and practices ALARAprinciples of radiation protection including the use and exchange ofpersonal dosimeters. Selects proper technical factors as recommended byHologic utilizing appropriate paddles. Checks equipment and accessoriesto ensure they are in proper operating condition. Ensures proper patientidentification for images and completeness of requisition used forbilling. Operates mammography equipment according to specific procedureto produce images of optimal quality while in a safe environment.
Performs screening and diagnostic mammography including additional viewsrequired for completeness of examination as listed in procedure manual.
Assists physician in the performance of specialized examinations such aspre-operative needle localization large core stereotactic breast biopsy? all using sterile technique when indicated and in accordance withestablished guidelines. Properly stocks supply and equipment requiredfor mammography procedures and stocks dressing rooms with gowns and/orrobes. Maintains work area and department in a clean and orderlycondition including cleaning room after each examination and weeklycleaning of screens. Ensure that examination rooms are properly suppliedwith equipment and materials. Assist in daily Quality Control testing ofequipment to ensure that the requirements established by the FederalRegistry stated in the Mammography Quality Standards Act are met.
Ensuresefficient patient flow. Monitors the schedule in advance to ensuresmooth workflow by conducting ?Tech Checks? which evaluates upcomingdiagnostic exams. This check will review if the order is correct if theEpic data is accurate and if the patient has prior images in place.
Performs all duties in a highly professional manner-treating allpatients with respect and using patient confidentiality as outlined inthe code of ethics. Adheres to all policies as published by BrownUniversity Health Rhode Island Hospital or Diagnostic Imaging such asbut not limited to Dress Code Personal Electronics in Workplace PatientIdentification etc. Dresses appropriately as outlined in the DiagnosticImaging Dress Code. Provides guidance to mammography students inpositioning technique and procedures.
